Job Overview

The post holder will work as a specialist Medical Sonographer, providing high-quality, evidence-based clinical care while demonstrating professional leadership and expertise in ultrasound practice. They will act as a professional role model in accordance with the standards and codes of conduct of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Society and College of Radiographers.

The role involves providing direct and indirect clinical care, maintaining specialist knowledge and skills, and contributing to the delivery and development of safe, effective and patient-centred ultrasound services across a range of clinical settings. The post holder will remain up to date with developments in Medical Ultrasound, undertake mandatory and annual training, and actively engage in continuing professional development.

A key responsibility will be supporting the education, training and development of sonography trainees and other healthcare professionals through teaching, supervision, coaching and clinical mentorship. The post holder will promote an effective, inclusive and supportive learning environment, recognising cultural diversity and individual learning needs, while ensuring education is informed by current evidence and best practice.

The post holder will also act as a source of specialist expertise within the department and across the Trust, providing professional advice and contributing to local and national initiatives where required. They will support positive change, service development, quality improvement and the maintenance of high clinical and professional standards.

Overall, the role requires a proactive and experienced practitioner who can combine specialist clinical expertise with education, leadership, research, quality improvement and professional development to enhance patient experience and contribute to the continued improvement of ultrasound services.


Main duties of the job

  • Leading on and maintaining good relationships with academic, administrative, technical and clinical colleagues.
  • Able to develop positive working relationships across BHFT to deliver improvements to staff training in Ultrasound.
  • Offer positive and specific feedback to trainees to enable understanding, prompt reflective practice and ultimately safe and appropriately skilled practitioners. This may involve delivering unwelcome information to trainees.
  • Undertaking other appropriate teaching and administrative responsibilities within the department as may be required.
  • Act as a lead practitioner for ultrasound training within Bedfordshire hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Provide clinical supervision and work-based learning to trainees.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Practice Educator - Ultrasound

This is a newly created post for a fixed term contract of 12 months. Applications are welcome from internal candidates only. See attached JD for detailed requirements of the role.

The post holder will oversee the training and educational needs of the ultrasound students cross site. The post holder will liaise with the University and departmental mentors/assessors to ensure all practical aspects of the training programme are adhered to. The Practice educator will take responsibility for student rosters and the Preceptorship programme.
