How You'll Make a Difference
Join a children’s social care service rated Good by Ofsted, where strong practice, supportive leadership and positive outcomes for children are recognised. As Practice Manager, you will lead a team of family support workers acting as Family Help lead practitioners, overseeing targeted interventions that help prevent needs from escalating and improve outcomes for children.
Working within a Family Help and Best Start Community team, you will provide supervision and oversight of practice, supporting alternatively qualified practitioners to work with families facing challenges such as mental health needs, domestic abuse, substance misuse and poverty. Through effective partnership working and sound decision-making, you will help ensure support is coordinated, strengths-based and focused on achieving lasting change.
What You Will Be Doing
Rather than routinely holding cases, the focus of your role is on enabling, guiding and quality assuring the practice of others to ensure children and families receive effective support. With support from a team manager, you will provide day-to-day leadership and oversight of assessments, plans and interventions, supporting practitioners to deliver high-quality practice while ensuring work is consistent with agreed thresholds, statutory responsibilities and service standards.
- Line manage, supervise and develop family support workers, promoting wellbeing, professional development and confident practice.
- Provide reflective supervision, case oversight and quality assurance, ensuring assessments, plans, interventions and reviews are outcome-focused and effective.
- Oversee risk, thresholds, referrals and step-up or step-down decisions, working closely with senior social workers or team managers.
- Build strong multi-agency relationships and support practitioners to coordinate strengths-based, whole-family responses.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
