Company Description

Simpson & Brown, founded in 1977 in Edinburgh, has grown from an architectural practice into a multi-disciplinary firm offering architecture, archaeology, architectural history, heritage consultancy, and master planning services. The practice is recognized for conserving some of the United Kingdom’s most important historic structures and for designing award-winning contemporary buildings. Its work focuses on improving the built environment through rigorous conservation and contextual design, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and responding to future challenges. The firm operates an archaeological division, Addyman Archaeology, and is supported by a specialist architectural history team that undertakes research, conservation plans, and heritage assessments. With five partners and around 30 staff working across the UK and abroad, Simpson & Brown is committed to quality, effective management, ongoing professional development, and client-focused service.

The Practice Manager is a full-time hybrid role based in Edinburgh, with the flexibility to work from home for part of the week. The person in this role will oversee day-to-day practice operations, including resource planning, scheduling, and supporting project delivery across architecture, archaeology, and heritage services. Responsibilities include managing office workflows, coordinating internal communication, supporting partners and project leads, and ensuring adherence to quality and compliance standards. The Practice Manager will monitor budgets, assist with financial reporting, and contribute to business planning, feasibility processes, and funding applications. The role also involves supporting recruitment and onboarding, organizing training and continuing professional development, and fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and well-managed working environment.

Qualifications

  • Operational and practice management skills, including experience coordinating office workflows, resource planning, and supporting project delivery.
  • Financial and administrative skills, such as basic budgeting, reporting, and familiarity with business processes related to feasibility studies and funding applications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with partners, project teams, clients, and external stakeholders.
  • Organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage competing deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Experience in professional services, architecture, construction, heritage, or related sectors is highly beneficial.
  • Comfort with standard office software and digital tools, including collaborative platforms used in hybrid work environments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and professional development.
  • Relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in practice management, business administration, architecture or construction management, or a related field.
