Main Duties of the Job

We are looking for a nurse to join the Preoperative Assessment Team, a specialist area of perioperative medicine. You will be providing effective Nurse led Pre-Operative Assessment to all elective surgical patients across all specialties and coordinating pathways of care.

You will have the opportunity to develop confidence in clinical decision making and will be supported by the nursing and consultant anaesthetic team who support the service.

There is a requirement to assess >1500 patients per month with a combination of electronic triage assessments, face to face clinics, which are supported by complex anaesthetic sessions.

The team are proud to continually improve the service that is provided to elective surgical patients. Recent projects include improved Paediatric preassessment pathways, Reasonable Adjustment visibility and implementing improved communication pathways with patients.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in the delivery of care to ensure the individual needs of the patients are met
  • Demonstrate an ability to assess the patients health status and follow agreed care pathways regarding the patients suitability for surgery or suitability to be added to the elective surgical waiting list, in accordance with Trust guidance and policies
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the physical, social and psychological care of patients about to undergo surgery
  • Be able to offer health promotion as required.
  • Develop and update patient information literature in accordance with Trust guidelines
  • Be proficient and competent in phlebotomy
  • Be proficient and competent in recording ECGs
  • Order Pre-Operative tests and Investigations according to NICE and Trust guidelines
  • Have the ability and knowledge to work within all aspects of the pre-operative patient assessment pathway for all elective patients
  • Co-ordinate the results of tests and investigations, liaising with GPs and taking action as required to reduce cancellations of surgery and improve patient health outcomes

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Nursing or equivalent training and experience
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable

  • NVQ Assessor / ENB 998/Cert 730
  • PACE Course

Experience

Essential

  • Relevant current clinical and management experience as band 5 Staff Nurse In the fields of elective surgery or anaesthetics
  • Ability to organise work for caseload of patients
  • Prioritising clinical care needs
  • Nursing patients in an elective clinical setting
