Job Title: Primary Design Engineer

Summary The Primary Design Engineer will lead a geographically diverse team of designers, sub-contractors, engineers, and project teams working on HV (High Voltage) equipment layouts. The role involves providing a high-level overview of design activities, interfacing with multiple teams across the project lifecycle, and supporting small-to-medium projects or providing guidance to senior engineers on larger projects.


About the Role

The Primary Designer serves as the technical guarantor for ensuring design work meets performance conditions, adheres to committed budget, deadlines, and Quality standards, and aligns with customer expectations, ensuring ease of installation, operation, and maintenance of systems.

The candidate will:

  • Plan and oversee basic and detailed design activities
  • Manage and coordinate execution progress of design deliverables
  • Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of engineering documentation for procurement, manufacturing, and site erection
  • Promote cost optimisation across all design phases

Scope of Work and Time Schedule

Key Responsibilities

  • Documentation and Workload Management
    • Establish an ordered list of required documents based on tender analysis, contract review, and project strategy
    • Evaluate engineering workload and deadlines with the Project Execution Manager (PEM) or Project Manager (PM)
    • Commit to budgeted man-days and timeframes for deliveries

  • Quality and Delivery Assurance

    • Ensure timely delivery of design outputs (including partner documents) to stakeholders
    • Anticipate and mitigate delivery risks, proposing necessary adjustments
    • Identify and recommend changes in scope (documenting data for claims or Variation Orders (VO))
  • Team and Project Leadership

    • Lead and coordinate design teams, ensuring progress stays on track -Manage and track man-hours spent on activities, aligning with project strategy
    • Represent customer interests in design decisions upon Project Manager request
    • Facilitate technical coordination meetings with key suppliers to synchronise designs
  • Technical Compliance and Risk Management

    • Analysing and ensuring compliance with customer technical requirements
    • Monitoring and resolving design-related issues across project execution
    • Ensuring technical consistency in the assigned design scope
    • Checking design subcontractor deliverables for accuracy
  • Cost Optimisation and Problem Solving

    • Prioritise cost-efficiency in basic and detailed design stages
    • Propose solutions to design challenges and follow associated resolutions

Desired Skills and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Relevant Degree: Electrical or mechanical (depending on field of activity)
  • Proven engineering experience (preferably 2–5 years) in relevant disciplines:
    • Project & EPC environments (Execution, Procurement, Construction environments preferred)
    • Experience in T&D (Transmission & Distribution), Power Generation, or Oil & Gas industries
    • Prior roles in lead technical management with multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to manage externally subcontracted design packages (various sizes and scopes)
