At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose to improve people’s lives.

We're looking for an experienced and innovative Principal Analyst (Data) to join our Business Intelligence Service and play a leading role in shaping how data is managed, engineered and used across the Council. This is an exciting opportunity to influence strategic decision-making, drive continuous improvement and help deliver better outcomes for residents through the effective use of data.

About The Team

The Business Intelligence Service provides data, insight and intelligence that support services across the Council. The Data Team works closely with colleagues throughout the organisation, particularly within Children's Services, Education, Adult Social Care and Place, helping services turn data into meaningful insight and evidence-based decisions.

As part of a collaborative and forward-thinking service, the team is committed to developing high-quality analytical products, modern data platforms and innovative ways of working. We are continually exploring opportunities to improve how data is collected, managed and used to support the Council's priorities.

About The Role

As the Data Team Principal Analyst, you will provide technical and professional leadership for Analytics Engineering across the Business Intelligence Service. Working in close partnership with the Development Team Principal Analyst, you will help shape the future direction of the service, develop standards and best practice, and ensure the delivery of trusted, analytics-ready data that enables better decisions across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Leading the planning, coordination and delivery of analysis-ready, trusted datasets and data models.
  • Driving the development and implementation of Analytics Engineering standards across the Business Intelligence Service.
  • Overseeing the integration, optimisation and governance of the Council's technical data environments, including Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Fabric and geospatial data platforms.
  • Leading complex cross-service projects, ensuring effective planning, risk management and delivery.
  • Supporting the development of data pipelines, architecture and engineering practices in collaboration with the Development Team.
  • Building strong relationships with senior stakeholders and partners to understand business challenges and identify data-driven solutions.
  • Mentoring and developing colleagues, helping build capability and promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Identifying emerging technologies, opportunities and best practice that can enhance how the Council works with data.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
