Roles & Opportunities: Principal Auditors Location: Hybrid (London/Swindon/Glasgow hub) or part-time flexible
About the Role
We are seeking highly talented Principal Auditors to join Nationwide’s expanding Internal Audit team during a period of exciting growth.
In this visible and impactful role, you will conduct high-quality, high-value audits across a range of business functions. Your work will ensure Nationwide remains sustainable, safe, and aligned with customer interests, supporting the Society’s mutual model and governance frameworks.
As a Principal Auditor, you will:
- Execute end-to-end audits with a risk-based approach, identifying critical issues and delivering actionable insights.
- Partner with stakeholders to challenge thinking, foster trust, and drive lasting improvements.
- Embed data and analytics to enhance audit rigor and deliver deeper, more impactful findings.
- Play a key role in shaping governance, risk management, and controls—directly impacting Nationwide’s long-term strength and member value.

Responsibilities
Core Activities
- Design, execute, and close out audits objectively and rigorously, adhering to internal audit standards.
- Apply a risk-based methodology to prioritise areas for independent assurance and add value.
- Identify systemic risks and gaps, recommending transparent, sustainable controls.
- Escalate findings proactively, engaging senior leadership when necessary.
- Collaborate with stakeholders (e.g., Directors, Business Heads) to explain key findings and recommendations effectively.
Behavioral & Strategic Contribution
- champion a culture of ethical governance; model integrity in audit work.
- Mentor junior auditors and contribute to team growth (e.g., training, succession planning).
- Sponsor innovation projects, especially those leveraging data analytics or AI tools for audit efficiency.
- Utilise experience to advocate for strong control environments and cross-functional coherence.
Requirements
Experience & Technical Skills
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a qualified Internal Auditor (or equivalent).
- Examined and certified qualification (e.g., ACA, CIA, or CFA highly preferred).
- Proven ability to lead designated audits from planning to delivery.
- Familiarity with taxonomy risks (e.g., financial crime, breach management, Protect complexities).
- Embedding of Continuous Auditing principles and enhancements in your approach.
