Principal Avionics & Electrical Systems Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Principal Avionics & Electrical Systems Engineer to join a growing aerospace engineering team, supporting the design, development, integration and certification of complex aircraft avionics and electrical systems.

This is a senior technical role offering the opportunity to work across a broad range of aircraft modification and systems engineering programmes, working closely with customers, suppliers, engineering teams and airworthiness professionals.

The Role

As Principal Avionics & Electrical Systems Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across avionics and electrical engineering activities, supporting the delivery of aircraft modification and installation programmes from concept through to certification, installation and testing. You will work closely with customer engineering teams to develop robust engineering solutions that meet customer requirements, regulatory standards and airworthiness objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and provide technical direction for avionics and electrical systems engineering activities.
  • Develop and review engineering packages for aircraft modifications and system installations.
  • Design and review schematics, wiring diagrams, electrical architecture and installation drawings.
  • Undertake and review Electrical Load Analysis and aircraft electrical system assessments.
  • Develop engineering reports, certification documentation, test schedules and technical submissions.
  • Support aircraft modification, installation and integration activities through to completion.
  • Review OEM Service Bulletins, vendor installation data and STC documentation.
  • Provide engineering support during aircraft installation, ground testing, flight testing and EMC activities.
  • Work closely with customers, suppliers, planning teams, project managers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Support airworthiness and certification activities within a Part 21J Design Organisation environment.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers and developing engineering professionals.
  • Identify engineering risks, dependencies and technical challenges and develop effective solutions.
  • Support technical bids, proposals and business development activities where required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, quality and technical governance.
  • Travel to customer sites and aircraft locations as required.

About You

We are looking for an experienced aerospace professional with a strong background in avionics and electrical systems engineering, ideally gained within aircraft modification, integration, aerospace or defence environments.

You will ideally have:

  • Degree/HND/HNC or equivalent qualification in Avionics, Electrical, Aerospace or Systems Engineering.
  • Significant experience working with aircraft avionics and electrical systems.
  • Experience within a Part 21J Design Organisation or similar regulated aerospace environment.
  • Strong understanding of airworthiness and certification processes.
  • Experience producing and reviewing wiring diagrams, schematics and installation drawings.
  • Experience with Electrical Load Analysis and aircraft electrical architecture.
  • Experience supporting aircraft installation, integration and testing.
  • Knowledge of certification and compliance activities.
  • Ability to interpret aircraft technical documentation, including AMMs, IPCs, CMMs, wiring manuals, engineering drawings and OEM documentation.
  • Strong technical report writing and presentation skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring or guidance to other engineers.

Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:

  • Aircraft modification and installation programmes.
  • Military and/or commercial aircraft.
  • Safety-critical systems.
  • DO-178 / DO-254 environments.
  • ARP4754A / ARP4761.
  • Safety assessment and hazard analysis.
  • Reliability and failure mode analysis.
  • EMC testing and certification.
  • Compliance Verification Engineer activities.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
