Principal Developer – Hybrid (London)

Waracle are looking for a Principal Developer to join our world-class digital technology consultancy, where we foster a diverse, intelligent, and ambitious community of tech specialists. We partner with innovative clients to tackle their most pressing business challenges, designing intelligent digital products and services.
We thrive on solving complex transformation challenges, moving seamlessly from strategy, design, delivery, to operations—whether it’s shaping architecture, optimising legacy systems, or enabling scalable cloud-native solutions. This is a hybrid role, with 2 days per week in our London office.

Shaping the Future of Digital Innovation
As a Principal Developer, you will:
- Guide robust architectures, data strategies, and cloud-native environments, working across multiple squads and collaborative programmes.
- Champion technical excellence, balancing cost, security, performance, and user experience to help Waracle deliver high-performance, world-class solutions.
- Collaborate with clients at all levels, advising on impactful digital solutions and translating complex technical trade-offs into clear recommendations.
- Mentor and inspire your team, fostering a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture.
- Define and evolve Waracle’s technical standards, contributing to knowledge-sharing and best-practice frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Problem-Solving
- Partner closely with client stakeholders to assess technology estates and advise on scalable, high-impact digital solutions.
- Drive architecture design and scaling with a focus on:
- Distributed systems
- Microservices
- Database designs (SQL and NoSQL)
- Cloud-native environments (with a preference for Azure, particularly in API management, monitoring, and scaling)
- Balance technical innovation with commercial realities, ensuring alignment with client goals while maintaining performance, security, and efficiency.

- De-risk projects by clear communication of technical decisions and trade-offs without jargon.
- Align multiple squads on technical standards, fostering cross-team cohesion.
Mentorship & Growth
- Mentor Senior Engineers and technical leads, cultivating a psychologically safe, growth-oriented culture.
- Foster engineering knowledge-sharing through thought leadership, lessons learned, and mentorship.
- Ensure consistency in technical excellence through documentation, review, and peer alignment.

Technical Expertise
- Proven experience designing scalable back-end architectures in cloud-native environments, especially with Azure.

- Hands-on experience with distributed systems, microservices, and hybrid data designs (SQL and NoSQL).
- Strong leadership in technical direction, ownership mindset, and influencing stakeholders to drive high standards in complex enterprise projects.
