FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading service provider in the wastewater industry for an experienced Principal Civil Engineer to strengthen their team.
Location: Rickmansworth, hybrid working available.

Principal Civil Engineer Role
We are seeking to strengthen our engineering team by appointing a Principal Civil Engineer. Reporting directly to the RDL, you will deliver high-quality engineering design services that enable the business to minimise risk and maximise profitability across turnkey and engineering services contracts.
You will be responsible for coordinating designs and producing design documentation and drawings, ensuring full compliance with health and safety requirements, relevant specifications, and applicable standards.
Principal Civil Engineer Responsibilities
- Produce cost-effective design layouts that fully meet specification requirements and can be constructed and commissioned efficiently. Cost considerations must include total out-turn costs, encompassing design time, materials, installation, erection, and any impacts on other disciplines.
- Apply standard practices wherever possible to maintain competitiveness and support efficiency.
- Provide accurate estimates and constructive feedback to the Proposals department.
- Adhere to established procedures and processes to support the ongoing development of the department.
- Assist in the development, monitoring, review, and continuous improvement of departmental procedures and processes.
- Maintain accurate files and records for the duration of each contract.
- Work within a culture that recognises customer satisfaction as fundamental to achieving business objectives, acknowledging customers as both end users and internal departments.
- Maintain and actively manage a personal development plan.
- Support the supervision, mentoring, and development of staff.
- Assist in maintaining a safe working environment for all personnel.
- Minimise waste across all departmental activities.
- Ensure designs fully consider environmental impacts.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant health and safety requirements.

Principal Civil Engineer Requirements
- Strong understanding of the principles of water and wastewater treatment.
- Proven experience in managing and mentoring staff involved in the design of relevant discipline elements of water and wastewater treatment plants.
- Membership of a professional institution, either chartered or working towards chartership.
- Ideally qualified to degree level in Civil Engineering.
- Minimum qualification of a Civil Engineering HND.
- Demonstrated ability to rationalise designs and develop economical and efficient plant layouts.
- Broad knowledge of water treatment disciplines, including mechanical, process and electrical engineering, as well as project management.
- Full UK driving licence.

Desirable
- Actively working towards Chartered Engineer status.
- Relevant Engineering Master’s degree.
