Principal Clinical Scientist
(Senior Clinical Scientist level also considered)
The Role
We're looking for a clinical scientist — someone who has been the scientific lead for clinical studies before, from protocol development to start-up (development of critical study documents) through to study execution, data analysis and interpretation and close-out with a clinical study report. Having prepared regulatory submissions of study results is a pre. You'll work in close partnership with the clinical operations team and CROs under the team's full-outsource operating model, managing that day-to-day relationship rather than delivering trial activity in-house. It's one of two newly approved roles, created ahead of anticipated demand rather than to backfill a departure, which means there's genuine room to help shape how the team works rather than simply joining an existing structure.
Hybrid based (3 days a week onsite) in Maidenhead (UK), Melbourne (Aus) or Zurich (CH)
Why It Matters
A clinical study is only as good as the people running it. A weak protocol, poorly managed start-up, or a fumbled relationship with the CRO delivering the trial can cost a program months — sometimes far more — and that delay sits between a therapy and the patients waiting on it. This role exists because CSL is adding capacity to get that execution right: someone who can lead all scientific needs of a study properly, and co-own the end to end alongside clinical operations, is what actually moves a clinical development plan forward. It's not a supporting or administrative function — it's the core that determines whether the science translates into a trial that runs cleanly and data that holds up.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You'll Be Responsible For
- You'll take ownership of clinical studies end-to-end, acting as the scientific and operational anchor between the program team and outsourced delivery partners.
- Lead all scientific elements of clinical studies from protocol development through study execution to a final clinical study report
- Write and/or take responsibility for study protocols, clinical study reports and other critical study documents
- Manage, alongside the clinical operations lead, day-to-day working relationships with CROs under a full-outsource operating model
- Collaborate closely with the cross-functional study teams — this is a collaborative role, not an isolated one
- Contribute to the scientific interpretation of clinical data and supporting documentation
- Build working relationships across the wider team, including colleagues based in the US and Australia
Experience Required
- Demonstrated, hands-on experience with clinical studies (protocol development, execution, close-out) — not solely oversight or academic exposure
- Experience writing clinical study protocols and clinical study reports directly
- Experience working within a full-outsource / CRO-dependent operating model
- A collaborative, cross-functional working style — comfortable building relationships rather than working independently
