Altrad are currently looking for an experienced Principal C&S Engineer to join our Engineering team.
This role will be responsible for delivering engineering excellence by providing specialist expertise in civil, structural and lifting engineering. The successful candidate will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in lifting operations, supporting projects across the business through structural design, lifting engineering, technical assurance and leadership of engineering activities.
The role offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, supporting clients across a range of industrial sectors while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards and company procedures.
Key Deliverables
- Provide technical leadership and specialist expertise in Civil & Structural and Lifting Engineering.
- Prepare, review and approve Lift Plans and Lifting Risk Assessments.
- Carry out structural steelwork design and analysis for lifting and permanent works.
- Design lifting lugs, trunnions, lifting beams and spreader beams.
- Assess lifting points and supporting steelwork for structural integrity.
- Calculate centres of gravity and determine appropriate lifting methodologies.
- Specify hoisting systems, including wire rope and winch arrangements.
- Support complex lifting operations including tailing (horizontal to vertical), fleeting and cross-hauling activities.
- Select suitable lifting equipment and lifting accessories in accordance with project requirements.
- Provide technical support and guidance on lifting engineering queries across the business.
- Ensure compliance with LOLER, PUWER, HASAWA and relevant British Standards.
- Participate in technical assurance activities, audits and incident investigations.
- Support multidisciplinary engineering teams and manage key stakeholder relationships.
- Mentor and coach engineers, supporting competency development and succession planning.
- Deputise for the Lead Engineer when required.
- Perform the role of Technical Authority for Lifting where applicable.

Key Requirements / Qualifications

- Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering (BEng, MEng, BSc, MSc or equivalent).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or recognised equivalent.
- Minimum of 10 years' post-graduate or relevant industry experience.
- Appointed Person (Lifting Operations) qualification in accordance with BS 7121.
- Appointed Person - Moving Loads qualification.
- OPITO Approved LOLER Competent Person Assessment (desirable).
- Extensive experience of LOLER and PUWER regulations.
- Proven experience in structural steelwork design and analysis.
- Strong knowledge of Health & Safety at Work legislation.
- Experience preparing Lift Plans and undertaking Lifting Risk Assessments.
- Excellent knowledge and application of British and other relevant lifting standards.
- Experience selecting lifting equipment and lifting accessories.
- Strong understanding of mobile crane operations and complex lifting methodologies.
- Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to mentor and develop engineering personnel.
- Flexible with a proactive, safety-focused approach.
