Principal Data & BI Engineer

Location: Berkshire – hybrid, approximately one office day per month
Salary: Competitive Dependent on Experience
Ref: J13180

Full right to work in the UK without requiring sponsorship now or in the future.

Build the platform. Own the products. Shape the standards.

A fast-growing global organisation is looking for an experienced Principal BI Engineer to play a key role in its transition from a SQL Server-led environment to a modern, scalable data platform built around Azure Databricks and Python.

This is not a traditional reporting role - You’ll work across the full data and BI lifecycle, owning complex solutions from initial stakeholder engagement and requirements gathering through to pipeline development, data modelling, semantic layers and Power BI delivery.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Design and build production-grade pipelines using Azure Databricks, Python, PySpark and SQL
  • Develop scalable Lakehouse architecture using Delta Lake and Unity Catalog
  • Build data and BI products from scratch and own them through to implementation
  • Connect marketing, sales and operational data to create a complete view of performance
  • Establish consistent KPI definitions and a trusted version of the truth
  • Influence senior stakeholders and help raise engineering standards across the team
  • Use AI tools such as Claude and OpenRouter to support development, code review and documentation

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
