Job Title: Principal Data Engineer

Duration: 3 months

Schedule: 3 days in the office & 2 days from home

Location: London (Hybrid)

This opportunity offers the chance to shape data foundations and end-to-end solutions within a major energy environment, supporting Data & AI readiness and enablement. The role is focused on designing robust, future-ready data platforms and helping to build data-driven thinking across both technical teams and business stakeholders. This position will suit professionals with strong expertise in AWS, Azure, SAP, ELT and data modelling who can combine technical leadership with delivery impact.

Required Experience

  • Experience leading hands-on technical delivery in data engineering and acting as a senior technical leader within complex IT or data transformation environments.
  • Experience defining data strategy, conceptualising data foundations and designing end-to-end data solutions and platforms.
  • Experience working across technical and business stakeholder groups, with the ability to communicate effectively with developers and business managers.
  • Experience driving change and improvement across people, process, data and technology.
  • Experience contributing to implementation efficiency, value delivery and continuous improvement across projects or pilot initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Expert-level capability in AWS, Azure or SAP.
  • Advanced ELT expertise.
  • Advanced data modelling capability.
  • Advanced data integration and ingestion skills.
  • Data manipulation and processing skills.
  • Experience with GitHub, GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps.
  • Experience with technologies including Data Factory, Databricks, SQL DB, Synapse, Stream Analytics, Glue, Airflow, Kinesis, Redshift, SonarQube and PyTest.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to support quality initiatives, community building and knowledge-sharing activities such as presentations or training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in project management and running a Scrum team.
  • Experience working with BPC and Planning.
  • Exposure to working with an external technical ecosystem.
  • Experience managing small teams.
  • Experience producing documentation using MKDocs.
  • Exposure to Artificial Intelligence, AI Governance Professional (AIGP) or stakeholder management environments.
