About the Role:
ClickHouse is looking for a Principal Database Performance Engineer to join the team behind our high-performance analytics database service. In this role, you will drive performance and scalability improvements across the stack, taking on ambiguous, high-impact technical challenges most engineers never get to touch. Our performance team owns the core of query execution - filters, aggregation, joins, and the index structures that make them fast. We're looking for a sharp, passionate engineer who wants to own database performance end-to-end on a petabyte-scale cloud database, from initial analysis and implementation, through production rollout.
What you will do:
- Identify impactful performance and scalability opportunities in customer or benchmark workloads
- Architect and implement optimized database algorithms and data structures across core relational operators, indexes, query processing, memory management and scheduling
- Drive the performance roadmap for latency, throughput, memory efficiency and hardware utilization improvements
- Participate in the development of a complex, high-performance database system, including meticulous testing and safe production rollout
- Represent the company externally through presentations, blog posts, and community contributions
- Mentor and support junior engineers on the team

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
