Principal Substation Secondary (P&C) Design Engineer
Birmingham – Hybrid
Contract position
Clearance: Active BPSS (Required)
I'm currently recruiting for a senior Protection & Control (P&C) Design Engineer to join a leading engineering team delivering major electricity transmission and substation projects.
This is a technical leadership role where you’ll lead P&C FEED and detailed design workstreams for transmission-scale substation projects. You’ll provide technical assurance, support tenders and bids, manage project interfaces and act as a senior technical point of contact for clients and stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading P&C design activities across FEED and detailed design
- Reviewing and assuring technical designs and project deliverables
- Providing technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to engineers
- Supporting bids, tenders, cost estimates and supplier evaluations
- Coordinating with primary, civil, structural and project management teams
- Managing technical interfaces with clients, suppliers and subcontractors
- Attending design reviews, client meetings, FATs, SATs and site visits
- Supporting business development and the growth of the P&C engineering capability

The ideal candidate will have:
- Proven experience in substation Protection & Control design
- Experience delivering UK or international transmission-scale projects
- Strong FEED and detailed design experience
- Knowledge of transmission substation protection, control and secondary systems
- Experience providing technical leadership or managing engineering teams
- Strong knowledge of IEC, IEEE and relevant industry standards
- Experience with technical bids, proposals and cost estimates
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- The right to work in the UK
