Principal Substation Primary (HV Plant) Design Engineer
Glasgow | Hybrid
Contract position
I’m currently recruiting for a senior technical leadership opportunity within a high-performing electrical engineering team delivering major electricity transmission and substation projects.
This role will involve leading the primary plant design of complex transmission-scale substations across FEED and detailed design stages. You’ll provide technical assurance, support project delivery, contribute to tenders and bids, and act as a senior point of contact for clients and stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading HV primary plant design workstreams
- Reviewing substation layouts, earthing designs, interlocking schemes and busbar calculations
- Providing technical leadership and mentoring to engineering teams
- Supporting bids, tenders, cost estimates and supplier evaluations
- Managing interfaces with civil, structural, secondary and project management teams
- Attending design reviews, FATs, SATs and site visits when required
- Building strong relationships with clients, suppliers and subcontractors

The ideal candidate will have:
- Proven experience in UK or international substation primary plant design
- Experience delivering transmission-scale electricity projects
- Strong knowledge of HV equipment, electrical standards and substation engineering
- Experience leading FEED and detailed design activities
- Technical leadership or team management experience
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience

Chartered Engineer status, transmission network experience and previous involvement in major UK electricity transmission projects would be advantageous.
