Principal Substation Primary (HV Plant) Design Engineer

Are you a Senior or Principal HV Design Engineer looking for a long-term, high-impact contract with a leading engineering consultancy?

We are seeking an experienced Principal Substation Primary (HV Plant) Design Engineer to lead technical delivery and team development on major electricity transmission projects.

Role Overview:

  • Role: Principal Substation Primary (HV Plant) Design Engineer
  • Location: Glasgow (Office/Hybrid options also available in Leeds, Birmingham, or Epsom)
  • Duration: 12 Months
  • Rate: Up to £90- £95/hr (Inside IR35 / Umbrella)
  • Clearance: Must hold or be eligible for BPSS security clearance

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Leadership: Lead FEED and detailed design workstreams for high-voltage (HV) transmission substation projects, ensuring full compliance and technical integrity.
  • Team Leadership & Mentorship: Line manage, mentor, and support the career development of junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Design & Quality Assurance: Review and assure HV plant layouts, earthing designs, interlocking schemes, busbar calculations, and technical specifications.
  • Tender & Bid Management: Act as tender manager for HV plant packages, reviewing technical offers to deliver competitive, compliant submissions.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Chair design and hazard review meetings, coordinate across multi-disciplinary teams, and attend site visits, FAT, and SAT as required.

Key Requirements:

  • Qualifications: Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience); Chartered Engineer status (or actively working towards it).
  • HV Expertise: Proven track record in primary plant design for substations (UK grid standards knowledge strongly preferred).
  • Leadership: Demonstrated experience managing engineering teams, resourcing, and technical quality control.
  • Standards: Strong working knowledge of electrical codes and standards (IEC, IEEE, National Grid standards).
  • Clearance: Active BPSS clearance
