Principal Design HSE Engineer
Costain’s multi-discipline engineering and design team focuses on delivering design outputs—ranging from studies to detailed designs for both permanent and temporary works—for our projects. The team prioritises sustainable and safe-by-design solutions, grounded in a strong constructability ethos.
A Principal Design HSE Engineer typically serves as the most senior engineer in their discipline for a specific project, holding full authority to act on behalf of that discipline when delegated by the Chief Design HSE Engineer.
About the Role
The Design HSE Engineering function is critical to ensuring a safe process plant design, supporting health, safety, and environmental objectives. Key responsibilities include:
- Producing documents that comply with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Environmental Agency, and other relevant regulatory bodies.
- Producing, checking, and approving Design HSE deliverables internally.
- Managing specialist consultants for HSE design activities that exceed Costain Engineering Ltd.’s in-house expertise.
The role directly influences project costs and timelines. Reporting lines vary based on project needs:
- Direct reporting to the Chief Design HSE Engineer.
- Project-specific reporting to the project engineering manager or project manager.
