Contract Principal Product Designer
6 months initial | Outside IR35
Up to £650/day
Fully remote
A well-funded consumer subscription business is seeking a contract Principal Product Designer to lead design across its native app and wider product ecosystem. The experience has grown quickly and in places unevenly, so the need is someone senior enough to bring structure to it without slowing delivery down. The team is highly capable and design maturity is still being built.
About the Role
As a Principal Product Designer, you'd work closely with product and engineering leadership, owning the design direction end to end across iOS, Android and the surrounding web and SaaS surfaces - from information architecture and core flows through to the detail of what actually ships. There's genuine scope to define the design language, the system underneath it and the way design, product and engineering work together going forward.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Responsibilities
As a contract Principal Product Designer you'll be competent in:
- Leading design end to end on native mobile, grounded in Apple HIG and Material, alongside web or SaaS product surfaces
- Setting information architecture and navigation across a fragmented product, and unifying it into something coherent and scalable
- Building or maturing a design system, plus the documentation and rituals that keep it alive after you've gone
- Tying design decisions to commercial outcomes such as conversion, activation and retention, and being able to evidence the impact
- Partnering with product and engineering leads on roadmap and sequencing, and pushing back where the plan doesn't hold
- Raising the craft bar around you through critique, coaching and hands-on direction rather than headcount
- Experience shaping design capability inside a scaling consumer business, where standards are still being written, is an excellent advantage.
