Our client is a leading engineering consultancy with a strong track record in the delivery of complex data centre and mission-critical infrastructure projects across the UK and international markets.
They are currently looking to appoint a Principal Electrical Engineer to join their London-based team. This is a senior technical leadership position, offering the opportunity to take responsibility for the delivery of major mission-critical projects while providing technical direction, client leadership and mentorship to the wider electrical engineering team.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering technically complex projects from concept and design development through to construction and commissioning, ensuring engineering quality, regulatory compliance and design excellence throughout.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Design Leadership
- Lead the electrical design and technical delivery of large-scale data centre and mission-critical projects.
- Take responsibility for concept, schematic, detailed design and construction-stage deliverables.
- Review and technically validate calculations, specifications, reports, drawings and technical submissions.
- Provide authoritative technical input and develop solutions to complex engineering and coordination challenges.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant UK regulations, British Standards, international standards and client requirements.
- Provide technical governance and quality assurance across project deliverables.
Project & Client Management
- Lead the electrical engineering function across multiple projects in coordination with project and senior leadership teams.
- Act as the electrical engineering lead during technical workshops, design reviews and client meetings.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and project stakeholders.
- Coordinate closely with mechanical, structural, architectural, public health and specialist engineering disciplines.
- Monitor technical quality, consistency and programme delivery across project teams.

Construction & Delivery
- Provide technical support throughout the construction and delivery stages of projects.
- Respond to technical queries and design clarifications.
- Attend site visits and support the resolution of design and engineering issues.
- Review commissioning inputs and support the successful implementation of design intent on site.
- Provide technical input during project close-out, commissioning and handover.
Business & Commercial Support
- Provide technical input into project planning and delivery strategies.
- Support the preparation of fee proposals and bid submissions.
- Contribute technical content to business development and client-facing materials.
- Demonstrate strong commercial awareness and contribute to effective project and fee management.
Leadership & Development
- Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to Senior, Intermediate and Associate Engineers.
- Support the continued development of the electrical engineering team.
- Promote technical excellence, consistency, innovation and best practice.
- Contribute to the development of engineering standards, processes and capabilities within the business.
Technical Experience
The successful candidate will have strong technical knowledge and hands-on experience across:
- Data centre and mission-critical electrical engineering design.
- Electrical resilience and redundancy philosophies, including N+1, 2N and Concurrent Maintainability.
- LV and MV power distribution systems.
- Standby generation, UPS systems and switchgear.
- Building Management Systems (BMS) integration.
- UK DNO connection processes, including G98, G99 and G100.
- Multidisciplinary design coordination and technical leadership.
- UK standards and regulations, including BS 7671 and Building Regulations.
- International standards and guidance, including IEC, NFPA, Uptime Institute and EN 50600.
- Tier III and Tier IV data centre environments.

About You
Our client is looking for an experienced electrical engineering professional who can combine strong technical capability with leadership and client-facing skills.
Must have:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- 10–15 years' relevant consultancy experience.
- Proven experience delivering large-scale data centre and mission-critical projects.
- Experience leading engineering teams and managing technical delivery.
- Strong client relationship and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience within an international engineering consultancy environment.
- Chartered Engineer status through the IET, or equivalent professional accreditation.
- Strong understanding of UK regulatory requirements and experience working with UK clients.
- Experience with Tier III / Tier IV data centre projects.
- Strong commercial awareness and experience contributing to fee management and project delivery.
