The Opportunity
Principal Electrical Engineer - Water Sector, Inverness
Scottish Water is about to invest £8.1bn in its network, the biggest programme in its history. Stantec is one of just two Primary Designers chosen to deliver it.
This landmark partnership, which potentially extends to 2039, secures meaningful work from our Inverness office. Not one project. Not one framework cycle. A pipeline of water and wastewater schemes that will shape how Scotland lives for a generation. This major framework success anchors our exceptional performance across the UK for the AMP8 regulatory cycle, where we have secured exciting new project wins and solidified our standing as the number 1 design consultancy in the regulated water sector.
Most engineers get one programme like this in a career. We're building the team now, and the people who join early get to shape how it runs.

Your Impact
Your technical leadership will directly support the delivery of essential water infrastructure across Scotland, helping clients improve resilience, enhance environmental performance and meet ambitious sustainability targets. The solutions you help deliver will contribute to reliable water services for communities while supporting the transition towards a more sustainable future.
Beyond project delivery, you'll play a key role in strengthening our engineering capability by developing future talent, supporting technical excellence and helping shape the continued growth of Stantec's Water business across Scotland.
About The Role
You will provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio of water and wastewater infrastructure projects for Scottish Water, taking responsibility for high-quality EICA design delivery from concept through to construction support. The role is based in our Edinburgh office with hybrid working.
You will lead electrical and EICA design across infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects, including treatment works, pumping stations and associated assets, providing technical governance, design assurance and engineering guidance throughout the project lifecycle.
You will develop and review key deliverables including Single Line Diagrams, Block Cable Diagrams, Network Infrastructure Diagrams, technical specifications and control philosophies, working closely with project managers, clients, contractors and multidisciplinary teams.
You will support the growth of the discipline by mentoring engineers, sharing technical knowledge and contributing to bids and framework opportunities, and you will champion innovation and best practice across Electrical Engineering.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
