We are seeking a Principal EMC Engineer with specialist knowledge in Military and Aerospace EMC standards, including DEF STAN 59-411, MIL-STD-461 and RTCA DO-160, to join our expert team. This is a senior technical position providing leadership and technical direction across the Military & Aerospace EMC department, supporting the continued development of capability, consistency and technical excellence within the team.
The role will combine technical leadership, mentoring and competency development with responsibility for technical governance, including report signatory duties, calibration sign-off, maintaining test procedures and supporting and managing UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 audit activities.
The Principal EMC Engineer will also remain available to undertake hands-on EMC testing as and when required to support customer delivery, departmental workload and revenue requirements.
This role is ideal for someone with deep EMC technical knowledge who is confident supporting complex projects, reviewing and signing technical reports, developing junior engineers and helping shape the future capability of the Military & Aerospace EMC department. The role provides technical leadership but does not currently include direct line-management responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership across Military and Aerospace EMC activities, ensuring high-quality execution, technical consistency and compliance with applicable standards and procedures.
- Serve as an authorised report signatory for EMC technical reports under ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring accuracy, technical integrity and traceability.
- Undertake hands-on EMC testing as and when required to support customer programmes, laboratory workload and departmental revenue delivery.
- Support and guide engineers in test preparation, execution, troubleshooting and interpretation of requirements for DEF STAN 59-411, MIL-STD-461, RTCA DO-160 and related standards.
- Take an active role in the direct training, mentoring and technical development of junior engineers and technicians, supporting competency development and technical authorisation.
- Provide day-to-day technical guidance to the EMC team and act as a senior technical point of contact for complex or unusual test requirements.
- Develop, review and maintain internal EMC procedures, test methods, work instructions and associated technical documentation in line with evolving standards, accreditation requirements and best practice.
- Act as an Authorised Person for calibration sign-off, reviewing calibration results and associated documentation to confirm equipment remains suitable for its intended use.
- Support the technical assessment of equipment following calibration failures, out-of-tolerance conditions or other technical concerns.
- Lead and coordinate technical preparation for UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 audits and assessments, ensuring procedures, competency records, equipment controls and technical documentation remain audit-ready.
- Manage and support the resolution of technical non-conformities, including root-cause investigation, corrective actions and continual improvement activities arising from UKAS assessments.
- Engage directly with customers and stakeholders to resolve technical queries, provide technical guidance and support successful project delivery.
- Collaborate with sales and commercial teams to scope technically complex projects and provide pre-sales technical support where required.
- Support the development and expansion of Military & Aerospace EMC capability, including identifying opportunities for new equipment, test methods, services and technical competencies.
- Help establish clear technical direction, consistent processes and strong technical support across the department as capability and headcount grow.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
