Principal Engineer - Real Time Risk & Decisioning

Central London - Hybrid

We’re looking to speak with exceptional engineers who have built systems where decisions need to be made in milliseconds - and getting them wrong has a real financial consequence.

The environment is high scale, data heavy and technically complex, with engineering sitting at the heart of how the business makes decisions in real time.

The company

A venture backed FinTech scale up building infrastructure that helps financial institutions make faster, more accurate decisions around risk, transactions and customer behaviour.

The business has already established strong product market fit and is now entering its next phase of growth, with continued investment into its core platform and engineering organisation.

Engineering is highly visible internally and works closely with Product, Data and Risk. This isn’t an organisation where technology simply supports the product - the technology is the product.

The next stage is focused on increasing scale, reducing decision latency and continuing to evolve the platform as transaction volumes and product complexity grow.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The role

This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who wants genuine technical influence without moving into people management.

You’ll help shape the architecture behind real time decisioning systems operating across high volume financial products.

That could include:

  • Designing low-latency, highly available decisioning platforms
  • Building systems used across fraud, credit, transaction risk or underwriting
  • Working with high-volume event streams and real-time data
  • Designing rules engines and decision frameworks
  • Improving system resilience, scalability and performance
  • Working closely with Data and ML teams to productionise models safely
  • Influencing architecture and engineering standards across multiple teams
  • Solving complex distributed systems problems where correctness really matters
  • Mentoring senior engineers and raising the technical bar across the organisation

We’re particularly interested in people with experience across:

  • Real-time decisioning
  • Fraud or financial crime systems
  • Credit / underwriting platforms
  • Payments infrastructure
  • High-throughput distributed systems
  • Event-driven architectures
  • Kafka or similar streaming technologies
  • Cloud-native environments
  • Large-scale transactional systems

You may currently be operating as a Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Distinguished Engineer or Senior Technical Lead. The specific language or framework matters less than the complexity of the systems you’ve built.

Why it’s interesting

This isn’t a role where you’ll spend 6 months arguing about coding standards.

You’ll be solving problems that sit directly between engineering, risk and commercial performance.

The systems you build will influence real customer outcomes, financial exposure and how quickly the business can launch and scale new products.

There’s significant technical ownership, visibility with senior leadership and the opportunity to shape architecture at a genuinely meaningful level.

If your background sits somewhere around real-time risk, decisioning, fraud, credit or high-scale financial systems, we'd be interested in speaking - whether you’re actively looking or not.
