Shape the Future of Scotland's Energy Network

At BakerHicks, we're playing a key role in delivering the UK's energy transition. Working alongside our construction colleagues at Morgan Sindall Utility Services, we have experienced significant growth within the Transmission & Distribution sector and continue to secure major framework commissions and infrastructure projects across the UK.

As demand for innovative, sustainable and resilient energy networks increases, we are looking for a Principal Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer to establish and lead our OHL design capability in Scotland. Based in our Motherwell office, this is a unique opportunity to influence the growth of a high-performing team while delivering critical transmission projects ranging from 132kV to 400kV.

Supported by our established OHL teams across England, you'll play a key role in shaping technical excellence, mentoring future talent, and delivering solutions that make a lasting impact on the UK's energy infrastructure.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Principal OHL Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across a portfolio of new-build and refurbishment overhead line projects while helping to grow and develop our Scottish OHL team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the delivery of detailed OHL design packages from concept through to implementation.
  • Providing technical oversight and ensuring designs meet client, industry and regulatory requirements.
  • Developing and mentoring engineers, supporting their technical and professional growth.
  • Producing and reviewing calculations, technical specifications, reports and design documentation.
  • Delivering consultancy services during feasibility and FEED stages, including client presentations and technical reports.
  • Ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations, health and safety legislation, and sustainability principles.
  • Managing project delivery to meet quality, programme, budget and safety objectives.
  • Undertaking OHL line design using PLS-CADD in accordance with BS EN 50341.
  • Producing and reviewing OHL drawings and design documentation.
  • Developing wind loading scenarios and load cases in accordance with relevant standards.
  • Conducting structural analysis using PLS-TOWER.
  • Producing foundation loading assessments and supporting foundation design activities.
  • Supporting bid and tender submissions through technical input and estimation.
  • Managing design risk and ensuring compliance with BakerHicks quality management procedures.
  • Building strong working relationships with clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary project teams.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
