Principal Engineer – MV/HV Cable Design (Floating Offshore Wind / Renewables)
Location: Newcastle, Aberdeen, or Dunfermline
About the Role
The Principal Engineer will play a critical role in Renewables product development, specifically for the Dynamic Inter Array Cable System (DIAC) for Floating Offshore Wind. You will collaborate closely with New Energies and work within a dedicated R&D team specialising in the development and maintenance of MV/HV submarine cable products and power cable elements in hybrid power umbilical products.
The R&D function at TechnipFMC is responsible for innovating Umbilical and Power Cable products, offering niche technical guidance in:
- Polymers & metallurgy
- Electrical engineering
- Cable/umbilical handling
- Product analysis
Your contributions will shape product direction, coordination, and implementation, ensuring TechnipFMC remains competitive through cutting-edge developments.
Job Purpose
We are seeking a Principal Engineer – MV/HV Cable Design to:
- Lead the technical design, development, and maintenance of MV/HV submarine cables for offshore wind and power cable elements in hybrid umbilical systems, aligned with New Product Development (NPD) and Product Life Maintenance procedures.
- Ensure technical excellence across all R&D deliverables, providing guidance to internal teams.
- Define and enforce design rules, technical standards, and documentation requirements.
- Strengthen TechnipFMC’s market position by reducing costs, improving quality, and expanding capability.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
- Technical authority for MV/HV submarine cables:
- Lead, manage, and document R&D projects.
- Develop and maintain cable design rules.
- Set standards for technical reports and documentation.
- Conduct cable design calculations and studies.
- Liaise with internal/external clients and suppliers.

Support & guidance throughout product lifecycle:
- Identify technical risks and review client specifications.
- Resolve non-conformances, design rule exceptions, and concessions.
- Address complex client technical queries with tailored solutions.

- Support and lead the integration of new technologies, tools, and calculation methods to enhance efficiency and quality.

- Train and mentor engineers at all levels.

Candidate Profile (You’re a Fit If)
Essential Requirements
- Degree or equivalent in:
- Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (preferred)
- Physics (alternative)
- Centenitite of progress towards Chartered Engineer Status.
- Extensive industry experience (≥5 years) in high-voltage submarine cables, focusing on:
- Offshore wind/gas sectors
- Detailed cable system design, R&D, and manufacturing
- Deep knowledge of:
- Cable constructions, ratings, installation, and operational limits
- Industry tools, methods, and best practices
- Client-supplied documentation processes
- Industry standards proficiency:
- IEC standards, CIGRE recommendations
- Qualification and testing practices
- Balance of problem-solving skills and the ability to thrrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Microsoft Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Desirable Bonus Skills
- MSc or higher in a relevant subject.
- Publication record of technical papers or industry forum engagement (e.g., CIGRE).
- Project leadership and stakeholder management experience.
- Cable test familiarity (including factory/lab/field R&D phases).
- Engineering software experience:
- MathCAD or equivalent
- Cable-specific tools (e.g., CYMCAP)
- Familiarity with FEA (e.g., COMSOL—a plus).
- Drive for process improvement in R&D methodologies.
