Principal Engineer (Front Office Trading Technology)

About the Opportunity

Our client is a leading global financial markets organisation seeking an exceptional Principal Engineer to lead the architecture, design, and delivery of a next-generation trading desktop platform. This is a rare opportunity to shape a greenfield initiative that will automate and streamline complex front-office workflows across a global trading business operating in highly demanding, real-time markets.

This is a highly visible player-coach position, combining deep hands-on engineering with architectural leadership. You will be instrumental in defining the technology strategy, establishing engineering standards, and driving delivery in partnership with global and offshore development teams. The role offers significant scope for influence and may evolve into formal leadership responsibilities.

The Role

As Principal Engineer, you will take ownership of the technical vision and delivery of a strategic trading platform from concept through to production. Working closely with trading, operations, compliance, and technology stakeholders, you will build robust, scalable, and high-performance solutions that support mission-critical front-office activities. You will be expected to remain close to the code while guiding architectural decisions, mentoring engineers, and ensuring technology solutions align with both business requirements and enterprise standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical architecture, design, and hands-on development of a strategic trading desktop platform.
  • Take ownership of a greenfield technology programme, delivering scalable and resilient solutions from inception through production support.
  • Define and implement architectures that meet stringent non-functional requirements, including performance, responsiveness, security, fault tolerance, and process isolation.
  • Navigate enterprise architecture and governance frameworks while maintaining focus on business outcomes and delivery objectives.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, fostering technical excellence and supporting career growth across distributed teams.
  • Partner effectively with offshore development teams and third-party delivery partners.
  • Establish and promote best practices for AI-assisted software development, ensuring robust governance and code-review standards.
  • Communicate technical decisions, risks, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including refactoring activities and architectural evolution as the platform scales.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
