Job Overview
The Principal Eng Plat AI Architect sets direction for how AI is embedded across Arm's engineering platforms, toolchains and workflows. Reporting to the Director of Engineering Platforms & AI Architecture, the role turns fast-moving AI capabilities into scalable, secure and supportable target architectures, roadmaps and reusable patterns.
The remit covers AI applied to silicon design and verification, software development, CI/CD, developer platforms, technical computing including HPC, EDA, engineering data and knowledge, and the CLI, IDE, API, chat and batch interfaces engineers use. This role determines what can reuse common AI foundations, what needs adaptation and where engineering-specific capabilities are justified.
This is a senior individual contributor role, leading through expertise and influence. It partners with the Senior Principal Bus App AI Architect and Director Eng Platform Architecture so common principles and controls work with specialist Engineering patterns. Product, platform, delivery and service owners remain accountable for implementation and operation.
Responsibilities
- Define and maintain the target architecture and roadmaps for AI-enabled engineering across software development, build, verification, test, design and engineering operations.
- Turn Engineering priorities and external market insight into clear choices on build, buy, reuse, platform fit and lifecycle, reducing fragmentation and avoidable vendor dependency.
- Create practical patterns for engineering agents, retrieval, model access, tool use, orchestration, context, evaluation, observability and production support.
- Define supported integration patterns across source control, CI/CD, artefact management, IDEs, command-line tools, APIs, schedulers, technical compute and specialist engineering platforms.
- Set architecture for identity propagation, secrets, permissions, tool and command execution, human approval, traceability, failure handling and safe shutdown.
- Shape how AI accesses source code, specifications, build and verification results, design artefacts, telemetry and engineering knowledge while protecting provenance, quality, confidentiality and intellectual property.
- Lead significant Engineering AI design decisions and contribute specialist expertise to design authority, balancing scale, latency, concurrency, resilience, cost and supportability from experiment through production.
- Partner with the Senior Principal Bus App AI Architect, Platform Architecture, Data, Security, Engineering and service leaders, and develop capability through mentoring and reusable guidance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Required Skills And Experience
- A record of leading architecture for complex engineering platforms, developer environments or technical-computing ecosystems at scale.
- Experience designing production AI solutions, including generative AI, agentic systems, retrieval-augmented generation, model integration and evaluation.
- Strong architecture knowledge across source control, CI/CD, artefact management, build systems, developer tooling, APIs, events, IDE and command-line workflows.
- Experience designing for demanding distributed or compute-intensive workloads, including throughput, latency, concurrency, scheduling, capacity, resilience and cost.
- Knowledge of identity, authorisation, secrets, privileged execution, software supply-chain controls, auditability and safe failure for AI-enabled workflows.
- Experience defining target architectures, reference patterns and non-functional requirements, and guiding services from experimentation into reliable production operation.
- The ability to influence senior Engineering and technology leaders, translate between specialists and enterprise teams, and build commitment without reporting-line authority.
“Nice To Have” Skills And Experience
- Experience with semiconductor or SoC development, EDA, verification, simulation or related engineering workflows.
- Experience designing agents that interact with code, tools, jobs or technical workflows, including tool-protocol ecosystems.
