Principal Engineering Surveyor

Murphy is hiring for an experienced and driven Principal Engineering Surveyor to lead the successful delivery of survey projects across major infrastructure sectors. The role sits within our Applied Engineering Division, based out of our Hemel Hempstead office.

Role Overview

As a Principal Engineering Surveyor, you will take ownership of projects from initial planning through to final delivery. Acting as the key operational lead, you will be responsible for ensuring projects are delivered safely, on programme, to the required quality standards and within budget.

You will coordinate survey teams, allocate resources, manage project risks, maintain utilisation across your team and ensure all survey deliverables meet Murphy and client requirements.

This is a leadership role requiring a strong combination of technical expertise, commercial awareness and people management. You will work closely with Project Teams, the Engineering Manager and other business stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes while developing and mentoring the next generation of survey professionals.

A Day in the Life

  • Taking ownership of survey projects from mobilisation through to completion.
  • Planning and coordinating survey teams, resources and equipment.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme and within budget.
  • Managing project utilisation, productivity and commercial performance.
  • Managing equipment, consumable and resource cost recovery.
  • Preparing and reviewing survey methodologies, delivery strategies and RAMS.
  • Reviewing shift reports, project progress and resource requirements.
  • Identifying project risks, delays and changes in scope, raising Early Warnings and Compensation Events where required.
  • Providing technical leadership and support to survey teams.
  • Reviewing survey deliverables and ensuring compliance with company workflows and project specifications.
  • Driving consistency, quality assurance and best practice across the department.
  • Supporting recruitment, mentoring and development of Surveyors, Assistant Surveyors and Graduates.
  • Building strong relationships with project teams, clients and key stakeholders.

Project Ownership

As a Principal Engineering Surveyor, you will be accountable for answering five key questions on every project:

  • Is my project safe?
  • Is my project on programme?
  • Is my project profitable?
  • Is my deliverable correct?
  • Is my team performing?

Essential Requirements

  • Significant experience within Engineering Surveying, Geomatics or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience leading the delivery of complex survey projects.
  • Strong understanding of commercial and operational project management.
  • Experience supervising and developing survey teams.
  • Strong knowledge of survey control, engineering surveying and modern geomatics technologies.
  • Experience managing project resources, utilisation and programme requirements.
  • Excellent understanding of health, safety and quality requirements.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Willingness to travel and stay away from home when required to support project delivery/ kick-off.

Desirable Requirements

  • Degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Geomatics, Surveying, Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered status (MRICS, MCInstCES or equivalent) or working towards professional accreditation.
  • SMSTS.
  • Experience with Site control, Laser Scanning, UAV, Monitoring, Utility Surveying, Machine Control or Bathymetric Surveying.
  • Experience on major infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts and change management processes.
