Principal Environmental Consultant – Offshore Permitting
Location: Aberdeen
Employment Type: Permanent or Contract
The Opportunity
An established, international energy consultancy is seeking a Principal or Specialist Environmental Consultant to join its growing Permits and Licensing team in Aberdeen.
This is a senior position for an experienced environmental professional with a strong background in preparing and reviewing oil and gas permits for projects on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS).
You will support a diverse portfolio of offshore energy projects, from initial concept and development through operations, late life and decommissioning. Depending on your experience, you may act as a Project Manager, Project Sponsor or be seconded directly into a client team.
The Role
You will lead the delivery of technically challenging permitting and licensing projects, manage day-to-day client relationships and provide guidance to consultants across the wider environmental team.
Secondment opportunities may place you at the heart of an operator’s project team, providing direct permitting and consenting support. You will continue to receive support from the consultancy’s wider technical team while acting as an important link between the client and the business.

- Preparing and reviewing environmental permit applications for UKCS oil and gas activities
- Delivering term and life-of-field chemical permitting
- Providing permitting and consenting support across operational, late-life and decommissioning projects
- Acting as Project Manager or Project Sponsor on relevant scopes of work
- Managing project budgets, programmes, deliverables and quality
- Leading day-to-day relationships with clients
- Liaising with operators, regulators and other key stakeholders
- Preparing high-quality technical reports and supporting documentation
- Undertaking technical review and quality assurance of project deliverables
- Providing practical regulatory and environmental advice to clients
- Supporting, mentoring and guiding consultants within the team
- Contributing to proposals, business development and the continued growth of the permitting and licensing service
Essential Experience and Qualifications
To be considered, you should have:
- Significant professional experience in UK offshore oil and gas permitting
- Demonstrable experience of term and life-of-field chemical permitting
- Strong knowledge of the UKCS regulatory and permitting environment
- Experience supporting offshore energy projects during the operational and/or late-life stages
- Experience leading and project-managing environmental scopes of work
- A degree in a relevant discipline, such as environmental science, chemistry or engineering
- A strong understanding of relevant offshore environmental legislation
- Experience reviewing, interpreting or contributing to consultations concerning applicable legislation
- A proven record of engaging effectively with operators, regulators and other stakeholders
- Excellent analytical, technical writing and communication skills
- A confident, collaborative and client-focused approach
- The right to work in the United Kingdom

Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous:
- Active involvement in relevant industry forums, technical committees or working groups
- Experience of supporting offshore decommissioning projects
- Previous experience working within or on secondment to an operator
- Experience mentoring or managing environmental consultants
