Job Description

"Are you ready to join a team of flood risk specialists and shape the future of the Water Industry?"

Our Water team is seeking a passionate Senior Flood Modeller to grow the Water business, delivering cutting-edge projects across the UK and beyond from our central hub in Bristol.

In this senior-level technical role, you’ll:

  • Mentor junior colleagues
  • Proactively grow our portfolio for local authorities, water companies, and private/public sector clients

Core Responsibilities

You’ll play a pivotal role in hydraulic modelling, flood risk assessments, and flood alleviation schemes, using leading software and frameworks:

  • Develop and refine hydraulic models (using Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, MIKE 11, MIKE 21, HEC-RAS, and ICM) for:

    • Flood alleviation schemes (design and feasibility)
    • Flood Risk Assessments (Regulatory/Agency compliance)
    • Reservoir flood studies
  • Lead water quality modelling, including:

    • Physico-chemical
    • Biological
    • Microbial
    • Chemical processes (using MIKE, Delft3D, SIMCAT, or ICM)
  • Concept, scope, and risk-analyze flooding strategies before project onset

  • Conduct hydrological assessments, using Flood Estimation Handbook (FeH) / ReFH2, and WINFAP.

  • Tender leadership: Proactively engage in DMU, RFT, and wider framework bid processes (project values range from single solutions to multimillion-pound frameworks).

  • Coaching and development: Foster career growth within the team.

  • Client engagement: Act as technical liaison, building strong relationships across multiple stakeholders.

  • Regulatory vigilance: Stay informed on new legislation, EA, DoE or ENVIRO standards impacting flood resilience.

  • Project delivery excellence:

    • Adherence to scope and time via AECOM’s project management system.
    • Collaborate with engineers/technical professionals on fluvial, coastal, surface water and drainage projects.
  • Hybrid workflow excellence: Execute high-quality Python, Anaconda, or Ruby scripting where applicable.

Requirements & Qualifications

Yu ascend the dizzying heights of technical mastery within hydraulic/water quality modelling and lead impactful projects—collaborating, innovating, and securing our collective legacy. If this passion—alongside dynamic problem-solving excellence—energises you, then AECOM’s call is for your voice.

Essential Criteria:

  • Proven expertise in hydraulic modelling software (Flood Modeller, Mike-models—11/21 and/or Alternatively, TUFLOW).
  • Water quality modelling (With tools: MIKE, Delft3D, or SIMCAT) or ICM.
  • Industry-standard knowledge: navigating Environment Agency Regulations, ensuring RAA compliance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Technical accuracy, whether Flood Estimation Handbook calculations or scrutiny of senior outputs.
  • Engineered commitment: self-driven project management, deadlines, and vigour in a multi-party environment.

Desired Skills & Differentiators:

  • A passion on-site: extended field work, client interaction perception and data input.
  • Technical scripter: fluency in Python/ Anaconda Ruby programming for automation analysis.
