Company Description

"Protect lives and landscapes with AECOM—deliver expert flood risk solutions that safeguard communities and infrastructure.”

Work with us. Change the world.

At AECOM, we’re committed to building a better world. By improving transport, securing energy supplies, ensuring access to clean water, and reshaping landscapes, our work enables communities and businesses to thrive. As the world’s trusted infrastructure consulting firm, we partner globally to tackle the most pressing challenges and create lasting legacies. Now is a perfect time to join us—with global infrastructure investment accelerating, our expertise is in high demand.

We seek forward-thinkers who bring fresh ideas and vision to our teams of nearly 50,000 professionals, including planners, engineers, scientists, digital innovators, and programme managers. Together, we deliver impactful projects worldwide.

“Are you ready to join a team of flood risk specialists and shape the future of the Water Industry?”

Our dynamic Water team is seeking a passionate Senior Flood Modeller to join its rapidly expanding Water Business Line. This role offers the opportunity to engage with high-profile projects across the UK and internationally—while being at the heart of one of the UK’s most innovative and interconnected northern engineering hubs.

In this position, you’ll serve as a senior technical leader, guiding junior team members and shaping our service offerings for local authorities, water companies, and private/public sector clients.

About the Role

At AECOM, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering high-impact flood modelling and hydrology, working largely under general supervision. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Modelling

    • Developing and verifying hydraulic models using industry-standard packages like Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, MIKE 11, MIKE 21, HEC-RAS, and ICM for flood risk management projects, flood alleviation schemes, and reservoir assessments.
    • Creating and extending water quality models (physico-chemical, biological, bacterial, and chemical) using software such as MIKE, Delft3D, SIMCAT, and ICM.
  • Project Delivery

    • Scoping and conceptualising flood risk modelling approaches while balancing risk, opportunity, and stakeholder needs.
    • Carrying out and reviewing hydrological assessments (e.g., Flood Estimation Handbook, ReFH2, WINFAP).
    • Leading and contributing to tenders, from small creative projects to multi-million-pound frameworks.
  • Team Development

    • Mentoring junior staff to ensure their professional growth and skill development.
    • Strengthening relationships with clients and cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Compliance and Collaboration

    • Staying updated with evolving legislation, guidelines, and best practices.
    • Using AECOM’s project management tools to meet quality standards, timelines, and budgets.
  • Client-Driven Delivery

    • Collaborating closely with clients and specialist engineers to implement fluvial, coastal, surface water, or drainage flood risk management.

AECOM welcomes those who are driven by innovation and passionate about transforming bold ideas into tangible improvements in communities and operational systems.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
