Senior Flood Modeller – Water Business Line
About the Role
Work with Flood Risk Specialists to shape the future of the Water Industry at AECOM – where ambitious infrastructure projects create positive change. This dynamic and growing role sits within AECOM’s Water Business Line, based at Bristol (Rivergate), to deliver high-profile flood risk management projects.
- Join a specialist team in the UK’s most ambitious northern engineering hub
- Guide junior staff and develop technical offerings for local authorities, water companies, and private/public sector clients
- Work on fluvial, coastal, surface water, or drainage projects delivering legacies for future generations
Responsibilities
As a senior technical resource, you will:
Core Technical Duties

Model Development & Review
- Develop and check hydraulic models using:
- Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, MIKE 11, MIKE 21, HEC-RAS, ICM
- Build water quality models (physico-chemical biological, bacterial, or chemical) with software like:
- MIKE, Delft3D, SIMCAT, or ICM
- Develop and check hydraulic models using:

Scoping & Analysis
- Conceptualise modelling approaches, balancing risks vs opportunities
- Conduct hydrological assessments (FEH, ReFH2, WINFAP)

Project Leadership
- Lead or contribute to tenders (from innovative projects to multimillion-pound frameworks)
- Mentor team members and support their professional development

Stakeholder Collaboration
- Foster client relationships and cross-disciplinary collaboration
- Compliance with legislative/development updates affecting water services

Delivery & System Requirements
- Use AECOM’s project management systems to deliver outputs aligned with programme/budget
- Partner with engineers and specialists to support fluvial, coastal, or drainage initiatives
- Maintain or recommended head duration in-line environments.
Requirements
Qualifications & Technical Expertise

Min. Entry
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or relevant discipline
- BSC-CIWEM (or similar professional qualification; near-completion acceptable)

Key Technical Knowledge
- Advanced experience in:
- Hydrological modelling (Flood Estimation Handbook, ReFH2, WINFAP)
- Softwares: MIKE, TUFLOW, ICM, SIMCAT
- Sound understanding of:
- Environment Agency’s flood model submission requirements (for Flood Risk Assessments)
- Water quality standards (physico-chemical/biological/regulatory aspects)
- Advanced experience in:

- Proficiency in scripting languages: Python, Anaconda, Ruby
Soft Skills & Behaviours
- Communication (written & verbal); technical explanation skills for non-specialists
- Autonomy & Collaboration: balance alongside self-directed work with input into deadlines-driven environments
