An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join a well-established multidisciplinary consultancy in Reading. This role offers the chance to lead a wide variety of geotechnical projects across the residential, commercial, infrastructure, and public sectors while working within a collaborative and technically focused team.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the delivery of geotechnical projects from tender stage through to completion. You will be responsible for managing site investigations, undertaking geotechnical analysis and design, producing high-quality technical reports, and mentoring junior engineers. The role also offers the opportunity to develop client relationships and contribute to the continued growth of the geotechnical team.

Principal Geotechnical Engineer Requirements

  • Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a related discipline.
  • Chartered or working towards Chartership (ICE or Geological Society).
  • Strong geotechnical design experience, including foundations, retaining structures, slope stability, and earthworks.
  • Experience managing ground investigations and interpreting geotechnical data.
  • Proficient in industry software such as Oasys Suite, GeoStudio, PLAXIS, or similar.
  • Strong technical report writing and project management skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Principal Geotechnical Engineer Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage geotechnical projects from inception through to completion.
  • Design foundations, retaining walls, slopes, and earthworks solutions.
  • Oversee ground investigations and supervise site works where required.
  • Review factual and interpretative ground investigation reports.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Prepare fee proposals and contribute to business development activities.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.
