Principal Highway Technician

Mayer Brown Limited – Woking, Surrey

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Highway Technician to join Mayer Brown Limited in our Woking Head Office.

Mayer Brown is a leading independent consultancy specialising in Transport Planning, Highway Infrastructure Design and Environmental Assessment across the UK. We work on a wide range of development-related infrastructure projects, supporting schemes from early feasibility and planning through to detailed design, technical approval and construction.

This role would suit an experienced highway technician with strong technical drawing, CAD and Civil 3D skills, who is confident producing high-quality highway design packages and supporting the delivery of development infrastructure schemes. You will play a key role within our highway infrastructure design team, working closely with engineers, transport planners, clients, architects, local authorities and other members of the project team.

The successful candidate will be technically capable, well organised and proactive, with the ability to work independently, support junior members of the team and help maintain consistently high standards in our design outputs.

Key Responsibilities

As Principal Highway Technician, your responsibilities will include:

  • Producing, reviewing and coordinating highway and civil engineering drawings for development infrastructure projects.
  • Preparing detailed technical drawings for Section 278, Section 38 and related highway approval submissions.
  • Developing highway layouts, general arrangements, setting-out drawings, long sections, cross sections, construction details and associated technical plans.
  • Using AutoCAD and Civil 3D to produce accurate, buildable and well-coordinated design information.
  • Supporting engineers with highway design development from feasibility and planning stages through to detailed design, technical approval and construction.
  • Preparing and developing 3D models including surfaces, alignments, corridors, grading, earthworks and related design outputs.
  • Undertaking or supporting vehicle tracking, junction layouts, access arrangements, servicing layouts, car park design and external works drawings.
  • Assisting with responses to technical comments from highway authorities, clients and approving bodies.
  • Working collaboratively with internal design teams and external consultants to ensure coordinated and practical design solutions.
  • Managing assigned drawing packages and technical tasks to agreed programmes and quality standards.
  • Supporting the preparation of drawing issue sheets, document control information and submissions through Common Data Environments where required.
  • Helping to maintain and improve CAD standards, drawing templates, workflows and quality procedures.
  • Providing guidance, checking support and mentoring to junior technicians and graduates.
  • Contributing to internal technical discussions, lessons learnt and continual improvement across the design team.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
