About the Role

Work with us. Change the world. As a Principal Hydrologist, you will lead hydrological projects that directly improve water resilience, flood risk management, and infrastructure planning—both in the UK and internationally. This is a senior, high-impact role where you’ll combine technical leadership, client engagement, and strategic oversight.

  • A compelling track record in hydrological modelling, flood risk assessment, and water resources strategy.
  • Leadership experience in multi-disciplinary projects across transport, energy, and development sectors.

You will work within Our Growing UK Water Team—based in Bristol—while benefiting from AECOM’s flexible hybrid working model.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Project Delivery

  • Lead hydrological assessments supporting flood risk appraisals, infrastructure design, catchment strategies, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Provide technical direction on:
    • Rainfall-runoff modelling
    • River flow estimation
    • Climate change considerations
    • Catchment analysis
  • Oversee and review hydrological modelling outputs, ensuring UK regulatory compliance (e.g., Flood Estimation Handbook, EA guidance).
  • Guide project teams on advanced hydrology techniques and best practice.

Client & Business Engagement

  • Deliver technical expertise on flood risk policy, drainage strategy, abstraction licensing, and environmental permitting.
  • Develop client relationships through bid preparation, stakeholder engagement, and proposal writing.
  • Partner with AECOM’s business teams to drive growth and competition success.

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Mentor junior hydrologists, fostering technical growth and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to deliver high-impact projects, from concept to completion.

Requirements

Professional Strengths

  • Degree (BSc/BEng/MSc) in Hydrology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, or a related field.
  • Extensive consultancy or regulatory experience in hydrological assessments—preferably in the UK.
  • Hands-on proficiency with:
    • UK hydrological guidance (FEH methods, EA/Glasgow Flood Protocol).
    • Modelling tools (HEC-RAS, MIKE, HYDROOS, IPA).
  • Chartered status (CEng, CSci, or CEnv) or equivalent ambition.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage budgets, and meet tight deadlines.

  • Strong verbal and written communication—clear reports and client-facing discussions.
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and thriving in a fast-paced, deadline-driven team.
  • Willingness to upskill, mentor, and collaborate across functions.
