The role
As a Principal Implementation Engineer Civil and Structural you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You'll join our Major Structures Group and play a pivotal role in delivering critical defence infrastructure that supports national security and operational readiness. This is an exciting opportunity to provide technical leadership on a major engineering programme, working at the interface between designers, contractors and project delivery teams.
You'll act as the intelligent customer for complex construction activities, helping to ensure engineering excellence, quality and safety throughout project delivery. This role offers the chance to influence major engineering decisions, lead talented engineers and further develop your career within one of the United Kingdom's leading engineering and defence organisations.

- Lead technical delivery and providing engineering leadership across key civil and structural construction packages.
- Review and approve technical queries, change requests, material approvals and engineering documentation.
- Coordinate activities between Babcock, designers, contractors and site representatives to ensure successful project delivery.
- Manage construction issues, identifying root causes and supporting continuous improvement throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Oversee construction surveillance activities and reviewing temporary works, risk assessments and method statements for compliance and safety.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week, and is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard. Hybrid working patterns are available, with a minimum of two days per week onsite.
Essential experience of the Principal Implementation Engineer Civil and Structural
- Demonstrating a strong understanding of civil and structural engineering principles and practices.
- Possessing experience of complex structures within highly regulated engineering environments.
- Communicating effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Working independently while adapting quickly in a fast-paced project environment.
- Delivering high-quality engineering outputs to agreed schedules and deadlines
Essential Qualifications for the Principal Implementation Engineer Civil and Structural
- Chartered Engineer status with a relevant professional institution such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).
Desirable
- Experience of nuclear safety-related structures or major infrastructure projects.

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
