Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

Salary: up to £80k + bonus (flexible)
Location: Farnham, Surrey (onsite at least 4 days per week)

This role would suit an experienced and highly technical mechanical design engineer with a proven track record of designing and delivering complex, high-volume products into the automotive market. The company is involved with the design and production of innovative electric vehicle powertrain systems incorporating HV electrical systems and electric motor systems.

As a principal engineer you will be a technical lead; guiding and mentoring more junior engineers on engineering best practices and enabling the smooth delivery of products from concept to series production. The role will require:

  • Demonstrable experience and technical competence in the design of complex high-volume products for the automotive industry (concept to series production)
  • Experience in HV electromechanical systems (e.g. EV propulsion / powertrain systems such as electric motors, inverter / converters, battery systems, OBCs) alternatively chassis systems (e.g. brakes, steering or potentially HEV / ICE powertrain components)
  • Experience of problem solving, CAE (simulation and validation), cost reduction and DFM/DFA principals

As well as offering guidance and support, you will play an important role in mechanical design decisions, will be hands-on with design, analysis and supporting products through prototype, validation and NPI phases.


Experience / Knowledge Required: Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

  • A degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering or similar coupled with strong practical mechanical design and analysis experience (use of Solidworks, Creo, CATIA or similar)
  • Proven high-volume automotive product design experience (essential) having taken complex products from concept to series production
  • Experience in HV electromechanical systems (e.g. EV propulsion / powertrain systems such as electric motors, inverter / converters, battery systems, OBCs) alternatively chassis systems (e.g. brakes, steering or potentially HEV / ICE powertrain components)
  • Experience of problem solving, CAE (simulation and validation), cost reduction and DFM/DFA principals
  • Well versed in mechanical design best practice including 3D solid modelling and 2D design, including, DFM, GD&T, BOMs
  • Able to technically lead projects and teams of mechanical design engineers
  • Experience with the design of electric motors would be ideal. Otherwise other high volume and complex systems could be considered: E.g. Transmissions, gear systems, bearings, reciprocating engine components, fuel pumps, etc.

Having taken products through to production, a broad understanding of metallic or plastic material selection and production processes would be expected.


Commutable Locations:

This principal mechanical design role is commutable from Basingstoke, Alton, Farnham, Farnborough, Woking, Guildford, Petersfield, Camberley and Winchester. Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate.


Role Details:

This is an onsite role at least 4 days per week.
