Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Building Construction)

Location

The successful candidate can be based from any of our offices in Sidcup, Blackfriars, Birmingham, Oxford, or Stevenage, with hybrid working available.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing Building Services team. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically strong engineering professional to take a leading role in the delivery of complex building services projects while mentoring and developing the next generation of engineers.

The successful candidate will lead the design and coordination of mechanical building services projects from initial feasibility through to completion, ensuring the highest standards of quality, innovation, and client service.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Lead the mechanical design of building services projects from feasibility through to completion.
  • Act as Lead Mechanical Engineer on projects of varying size, complexity, and value.
  • Produce and review detailed calculations, specifications, reports, schedules, and design drawings.
  • Design and coordinate HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, public health, and renewable energy systems.
  • Ensure designs comply with Building Regulations, British Standards, CIBSE guidance, and client requirements.
  • Promote innovative, sustainable, and low-carbon engineering solutions.

Project Delivery

  • Manage project programmes, technical deliverables, and multidisciplinary coordination activities.
  • Attend client, design team, and site meetings.
  • Undertake site inspections, technical surveys, and condition assessments.
  • Review contractor technical submissions, commissioning information, and as-installed documentation.
  • Ensure projects are delivered to agreed timescales, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Support quality assurance processes and technical reviews.

Team Development & Leadership

  • Mentor and support Engineers, Graduate Engineers, and Technicians.
  • Assist team members working towards Chartership and professional accreditation.
  • Support recruitment activities, technical assessments, and interviews where required.
  • Contribute to staff training and professional development initiatives.
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or demonstrable progress towards Chartership.
  • Significant experience within a Building Services Consultancy environment.
  • A proven track record of leading mechanical building services projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge of:
    • HVAC Systems
    • Heating Systems
    • Cooling Systems
    • Ventilation Systems
    • Public Health Engineering
    • Renewable Energy Technologies
  • Experience producing and reviewing detailed mechanical engineering designs.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and client-facing abilities.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities effectively.
