Principal Mechanical Engineer – UK Water/Wastewater

About the Role
The UK water sector is entering a phase of major investment and transformation. As Egis accelerates its Water Business in the UK, we are building a high-performing Mechanical Engineering team to lead this evolution.
We’re seeking applicants who want to contribute meaningfully to major UK water and wastewater programmes. In a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, you’ll shape technically robust, sustainable, and innovative treatment solutions across nationally significant projects.
This is a unique opportunity to join at a critical stage in Egis’ UK growth, helping establish, shape, and expand a mechanical engineering capability built on global infrastructure expertise and long-term sector commitment.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Design
- Lead mechanical design delivery on multidisciplinary water/wastewater treatment projects across the full design lifecycle.
- Act as mechanical technical lead, overseeing design strategy, key decisions, interfaces, risks, and deliverable quality.
- Review and approve mechanical calculations, specifications, datasheets, reports, P&IDs, layouts, schedules, drawings, and supplier/contractor submissions.
- Lead equipment selection and mechanical design for pumps, pipework, valves, tanks, lifting systems, packaged plant, treatment equipment, and process systems.
Technical Reviews & Workshops
- Lead mechanical input for optioneering, value engineering, design reviews, HAZOP/SWIFT, constructability, maintainability, and commissioning reviews.
- Drive multidisciplinary coordination with Process, EICA, Civil/Structural, Architectural, MEP, Construction, and Operations teams.

Digital & Lean Delivery
- Promote digitally enabled delivery through blended information modelling (BIM), 3D coordination, hydraulic analysis, data-led design, and reusable templates.
- Provide technical assurance and support project managers on risk, scope, resourcing, programming, and change control.
Team & Growth Mentorship
- Mentor and manage engineers, supporting recruitment, development, and chartership progression.
- Contribute to bids, client engagement, opportunity shaping, and growth of mechanical capability.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- BEng/MEng or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
- Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer status with a relevant institution (e.g., IMechE).
- 8–10+ years of relevant mechanical engineering design experience, preferably in water, wastewater, biosolids/bioresources, or oil & gas.
- Proven ability to act as mechanical discipline lead or senior technical lead on multidisciplinary projects.
- Strong expertise in mechanical treatment/process systems, including:
- Equipment selection, pumping systems, pipework, valves, hydraulics, layouts, and packaged plant.
- Deep understanding of UK water industry standards, CDM 2015, safety-by-design, regulatory drivers, and typical delivery models.
- Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces and resolve complex mechanical design challenges.
- Digital mindset, with experience in modelling, automation, BIM/3D, data-led design, or workflow standardisation.
- Confident client-facing communicator, skilled in leading workshops, technical reviews, and design discussions.
- Experience in mentoring engineers and developing technical capability.
Desirable Skills/Knowledge
- Deep expertise in:
- Wastewater treatment, clean water treatment, sludge/bioresources, water reuse, pumping stations, chemical dosing, odour control, energy recovery, or package plant.
- Experience with AMP8, WINEP, SRO, D&B, framework, alliance, or contractor-led projects.
- Ability to develop mechanical design standards, calculation tools, equipment specs, QA processes, or reusable digital workflows.
- Contributions to recruitment, resourcing, bid writing, technical proposals, client presentations, or new service development.
