Job Title
Principal Mechanical Engineer – UK Water/Wastewater (London | Bristol | Manchester, Hybrid)
About the Role
Egis is growing its Water Business team in the UK, seeking key-players to help drive transformation and investment in:
- Mechanical Engineering design for national, high-impact projects.
- Delivery across the full design lifecycle, embedding sustainability and innovation.
- A rapidly scaling environment with immediate impact, career growth, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Design
- Lead mechanical design delivery on multidisciplinary water/wastewater treatment projects.
- Own technical design strategy, core decisions, risk management, and quality of outputs.
- Review and approve mechanical specifications, calculations, datasheets, reports, P&IDs, layouts, schedules, and supplier submissions.
- Select equipment for critical systems — pumps, pipework, valves, tanks, lifting systems, packaged plants, and treatment equipment.

Process & Risk Management
- Contribute to optioneering, value engineering, design reviews, HAZOP/SWIFT, constructability, safety-by-design reviews, and commissioning.
- Manage mechanical input for hydraulic analysis, automation, and data-led design.
Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Drive collaboration with teams on Process, EICA, civil/structural, architectural, MEP, construction, and operations.
- Ensure alignment with lean methods, BIM/3D coordination, reusable templates, and digital workflows.
Technical Assurance & Risk
- Provide technical consultancy to project managers on risk, scope, resourcing, programmes, and change control.
- Uplift standards and templates for future mechanical capability.
Leadership & Growth
- Mentor and supervise junior engineers, support recruitment and career development, and drive chartership progression.
- Shape bids, client engagement, and opportunities to grow mechanical expertise within Egis.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum
- BEng/MEng or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
- Chartered Engineer/International Engineer (CEng/IEng) with a recognised body (examples: IMechE).
- 8–10+ years’ hands-on experience in water, wastewater, or biologens, with design leadership in multidisciplinary projects.
- Deep expertise required in:
- Equipment selection
- Fluid mechanics (hydraulics, valves, pipework)
- Processчних systems
- APM8/national strategies, UK industry standards, CDM 2015, safety-by-design.
- Multidisciplinary coordination, with experience resolving complex mechanical challenges.
- Digital fluency—applying modelling, BIM, data analysis, and reusable templates.

Client-Facing
- Ability to lead workshops, technical reviews, and discussions confidently.
Desirable Skills/Experience
- Specialisation in complex treatment areas:
- Sludge/biosolids/clean-water reuse
- Wastewater packaging plants
- Energy recovery or odour control.
- Experience with project frameworks (AMP8, SRO, alliances, contractor-led models).
- Technical standards proposer (design standards, QA processes, automation).
- Experience contributing to RFPs, team builds, or bid submissions.
