Are you an experienced environmental health professional ready to lead and make an impact? Rushcliffe Borough Council has an exciting Principal Officer (Environmental Protection and Housing) opportunity!

Location: Rushcliffe, Nottingham, NG2 7YG
Salary: LS07 £51,105-£54,198 per annum (pro-rata)
Job Type: 18 Month Fixed Term Contract
Hours: 14.5 hrs per week
Closing Date: Sunday 23rd August 2026 midnight

Principal Officer - The Role:

This is a fixed term contract role working 14.5 hours per week, providing an ideal opportunity to consolidate management experience and deliver technical and operational leadership within the Environmental Health management team.

You will work closely with the Assistant Director for Public Protection and another Principal Officer, managing a defined group of staff and providing technical leadership across environmental protection and private sector housing. You will also contribute to formulating the policy framework for environmental health and have opportunities to attend the Council's Leadership Forum to contribute to wider management and leadership across the organisation.

Principal Officer - Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a defined group of staffing resources and provide technical leadership across environmental protection and private sector housing areas
  • Oversee industrial pollution control including investigation of statutory nuisance complaints, contaminated land, air quality, and private sector housing enforcement
  • Undertake line management, performance management and reporting responsibilities for your team
  • Work with the Assistant Director for Public Protection to develop environmental health policy frameworks

Principal Officer - You:

  • Current or recent post-qualification experience in environmental health with knowledge of current legislation and practice in at least one of the following: industrial pollution control, contaminated land, air quality, or private sector housing
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a small team of technical and environmental health officers
  • Experience in management or willingness to develop management capability (secondment candidates from local government considered)
