Job Title: Principal Piping Engineer
Reports To: Engineering Manager
Location: Stockton-on-Tees
Department: pxEngineering

The Role
The primary function of the role is to support the delivery of defined engineering tasks for minor modifications and projects to the highest standards, complying with legal obligations and the client statement of requirements.
In addition, the role involves supporting the development of proposals for new business opportunities, the provision of consultancy services, and deputy line management responsibilities within the discipline. The role is full time, days based, with infrequent travel and no direct line management responsibilities; however, the seniority and professional nature of the position means there is a focus on the direct or indirect management of teams, projects, processes, and systems.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Delivery & Design Assurance
- Provide technical expertise for the specification, design, procurement support, installation, and commissioning of the engineering systems
- Support design assurance for the discipline and provide ongoing technical support to projects and the wider team
- Produce, review, and guide the associated documentation relating to the design, installation, and operation of discipline-specific systems
- Be conversant and compliant with UK legislation, company rules, procedures, and instructions, contributing to appropriate procedural and system updates
- Carry out discipline audits, ensuring full compliance with quality procedures within the discipline

- Where required, perform the role of Lead Engineer for appropriate projects in line with the scope of work and as-sold budgets
- Make decisions involving technical issues, budget considerations, project schedules, and safety with a minimum level of supervision
- Deliver on time and in full for the responsible scope
- Deputise for the Discipline Manager in their absence, acting as the focal point for all discipline-specific technical and managerial issues and decisions
Business Winning & Commercial Support
- Support business winning, including capability presentations, the generation of early execution strategies, and associated cost estimates
- Support the development of proposals for new business opportunities and the provision of consultancy services
Discipline Development & Continuous Improvement
- Support resource management within the discipline, providing inputs to MPPs and recruitment, and conducting performance reviews for junior staff
- Assess competence within the discipline
- Support the roll out of engineering procedures, work instructions, standards, and guidance documents
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and the generation of project and discipline procedures

Key Requirements
- Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent
- Engineering design experience in the delivery of minor modifications and supporting projects through the full life-cycle, including Pre-FEED, FEED, and EPC phases, within the chemicals, petrochemicals, oil and gas, and power generation industries
- Strong working knowledge of CAD and engineering systems, including 2D AutoCAD, 3D modelling systems, Navisworks Manage, and Caesar II stress analysis
- Experience of working within the procurement life-cycle, including specification, enquiry, and post-order support for equipment and sub-contracts
- Full appreciation of best practice in design assurance, including competence management, checking and approval processes, management of technical change, and design and safety reviews
- Experience of interpreting documents such as safety rules, project execution plans, quality plans, basis of design, P&IDs, and specifications
- Understanding of project control processes, including assistance with the generation of baseline schedules and managing discipline performance metrics (CPI and SPI), together with the management of budgets and scope change
- Knowledge and application of SHE and quality systems, ensuring compliance and driving improvement
- Knowledge of legislation pertinent to the discipline, systems, and standards, including ASME B31.3 / B31.1, BS EN 13480, and the Pressure Equipment Directive
- Effective report writing, communication, and presentation skills
