Principal Platform Engineer – Cyber & Security Solutions Division

Salary Range:

£53,269 - £71,400 Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework. The range reflects the approved band, with broader market benchmarking. Exceptions require governance controls to ensure internal equity.

Are you ready to tackle complex cyber and platform engineering challenges? At Leonardo, our Principal Platform Engineers drive the design, integration, and secure delivery of platforms supporting critical missions.

This Principal Platform Engineer role in the Cyber & Security Solutions Division focuses on:

  • Delivering, maintaining, and improving secure platform and systems engineering solutions.
  • Serving defence, government, and public sector clients.

This position offers:

  • A blended hybrid working model (some time at Yeovil office for collaboration).
  • Opportunities to shape technological innovation in secure environments.
  • Leadership in multiple platform domains and mentorship of teams.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Delivery

  • Act as the technical authority in platform engineering domains (e.g., cloud, virtualisation, automation, networking, cyber tooling).
  • Design and implement secure platforms across on-premise, hybrid, and cloud environments.
  • Translate complex customer requirements into secure system designs and architectures.
  • Develop high-/low-level designs, ensuring secure-by-design principles are applied.
  • Take full ownership of technical delivery—planning, estimation, and progress reporting.
  • Engage with stakeholders (internal/external) to articulate technical solutions and justify design decisions.

Team & Innovation Growth

  • Mentor and coach junior/senior engineers to elevate technical capability.
  • Contribute to technology strategy, feasibility studies, and innovation projects.

Domain-Specific Focus

  • Work in domains like cloud, hybrid environments, data transfer mechanisms, and auditable access controls. Key responsibilities include:
    • Requirement capture & analysis for cross-domain solutions (e.g., high-to-low security level data transfers).
    • Designing controlled data sanitisation/validation processes to align with defence and government standards.
    • Optimising performance and throughput for secure transfer mechanisms.

Requirements

Core Competencies (Must-Have)

  • Extensive expertise in:
    • Windows/Linux operating systems
    • Virtualisation platforms (VMware, Hyper-V)
    • Cross-domain solutions – designing/implementing secure data transfer between security domains (e.g., restricted-to-enterprise).
    • Secure data handling – sanitisation, validation, and filtering mechanisms.
    • Networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, firewalls).
    • Automation & scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python, Ansible, Terraform).
  • Cyber security compliance – knowledge of accreditation requirements and secure systems engineering.
  • Experience across secure data flow assurance under high-controls (e.g., cross-domain, air-gapped, defence environments).

Desirable Diploma

  • Cross-domain solutions (e.g., tools like Opswat).
  • Data diode & one-way transfer architectures.
  • Security tooling integration (SIEM, SOC).
  • Hands-on cloud experience (AWS, Azure) and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • DevSecOps & CI/CD pipeline familiarity.
  • Containerisation tools (Kubernetes, Docker).

Clearance & Security

This role requires:

  • Completion of UK Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) pre-employment checks.
  • Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance prior to employment commencement.
