Principal Power Electronics Engineer
Location: Edinburgh, Scotland
Working Pattern: Full-Time, On-Site (5 Days per Week)

The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Principal Power Electronics Engineer to lead the technical delivery of advanced power conversion systems for demanding industrial, energy, transportation and mission-critical applications. This is a senior engineering position offering the opportunity to influence product architecture, mentor multi-disciplinary teams and act as the technical authority across the full product development lifecycle.
Operating from our Edinburgh engineering facility, you will lead the design and development of high-power electronic systems, working closely with customers, project managers and engineering teams to deliver innovative, robust and commercially successful solutions. This is an on-site role, requiring regular collaboration with engineering, manufacturing and test teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the technical execution of complex power electronics projects from concept through to delivery.
- Define system architectures and ensure designs meet customer, performance and safety requirements.
- Develop system models and simulations to validate performance under all operating conditions.
- Produce functional specifications and technical documentation for multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Work alongside project management teams to reduce technical risk and ensure successful project delivery.
- Lead design reviews and approve technical documentation, component specifications and engineering procedures.
- Support customer engagement activities and present technical solutions during design reviews.
- Drive product qualification, validation and compliance activities.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to engineers across multiple disciplines.

Required Experience
The successful candidate will have a strong background in the design and development of power electronic systems, including:
- Design, simulation and testing of power electronic converters including AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC topologies.
- Experience with low-voltage power conversion systems up to 1000Vac / 1500Vdc and above 10kW.
- Development of solutions for industrial, renewable energy, transportation, defence or critical infrastructure applications.
- Proficiency with simulation tools such as SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS.
- Strong understanding of analogue and digital circuit design, magnetic components, thermal management and system integration.
- Knowledge of EMC design principles and mitigation techniques.
- Hands-on experience using laboratory test equipment and managing validation activities.

Preferred Experience
- Technical bid support and customer-facing engineering activities.
- Product certification and regulatory compliance experience.
- Experience across the complete product lifecycle, from concept through commissioning.
- Familiarity with medium-voltage systems, embedded control or software-controlled power electronics.
- Previous leadership or line management responsibility for engineering teams.
Qualifications
- Degree in Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Master's degree, PhD, Chartered Engineer status or professional membership would be advantageous.
