Job Title: Principal Product Safety Engineer Radars

Location

Portsmouth Broad Oak, Cowes – can be UK wide, working a hybrid pattern

Salary

Circa £60,000 depending on skills and experience + bonus scheme

Role description:

Reporting to the Radar Product Safety Manager, you will deliver product safety engineering activities across legacy and future radar systems, providing expert advice, producing safety documentation, ensuring compliance with safety requirements, solving complex engineering challenges, supporting project milestones, and offering technical guidance to stakeholders. Knowledge of military product design is beneficial.

Core duties:

  • Providing expert product safety guidance to engineering teams, supporting projects, bids and design activities
  • Developing and maintaining safety management plans, hazard logs, safety cases and certification evidence
  • Conducting hazard identification, risk assessments and safety analyses, including FMEA and FTA methodologies
  • Evaluating engineering designs and collaborating with customers to ensure safety requirements are achieved
  • Leading or supporting product safety reviews with customers, regulators, supply chain partners and stakeholders
  • Promoting a strong safety culture through investigations, technical leadership, mentoring and capability development

Essential skills:

  • Knowledge of defence and or MOD safety standards, including Def Stan 00-055/056 or MIL-STAN 882E
  • Experience applying safety processes across systems engineering lifecycles and product development
  • Skilled in hazard identification, risk assessment, and safety analysis techniques
  • Ability to develop robust safety cases, ALARP justifications, and hazard logs
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication, collaborative working, and technical report writing skills
  • Degree-qualified engineer, ideally CEng/IEng, or willingness working towards, with broad product safety expertise
