Job Description

As the Principal Radiation Physicist, you’ll spearhead radiation physics and shielding work across critical defence programmes, including the UK’s nuclear submarine portfolio. Your responsibilities span supervising assessments, optimising designs, and lead innovative programme-specific radiological solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and execute assessments/experiments to support system qualification
  • Contribute to ongoing design optimisation and defence programme improvements
  • Author and review radiological safety justifications for proposed designs
  • Direct the development of in-house analytical toolsets to advance department goals
  • Collaborate on detailed shielding design solutions while balancing build constraints with key performance requirements

Requirements

Education & Qualification

  • STEM degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Nuclear Engineering

Technical Competency

  • Hands-on experience with radiation transport codes (e.g. MCNP, MCBEND, Attila)
  • Deep proficiency in rad physics principles and industrial applications
  • Experience in radiation safety studies and application of ALARP principles
  • Radiation metrology expertise

Security & Eligibility

  • Must achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard and potentially higher security clearance (typically requiring 5–10 years UK residency depending on sub-program requirements).

The Role

Part of the Radiation Physics and Shielding Team at BAE, you’ll work on cutting-edge defence projects for the UK submarine fleet, addressing design validation, metrology, and novel electronic detector R&D. Our team has relocation assistance, subject to programme-specific criteria.
