Job Description

This post is for the B9 Principal Psychologist position at HMP Welland Oaks. HMP Welland Oaks is currently in the build phase and will be a new Category B prison within the Long Term High Security Directorate, with a capacity of 1705. The opening date for the prison is predicted to be mid/late 2027.

The successful candidate would take up post prior to the opening of the prison, and will initially be involved in the planning, sequencing and project management of the clinical provisions within the prison. This recruitment will coincide with the sequenced recruitment for the Operational Lead Governor, and prior to SLT members. The Principal Psychologist will be expected to bring a psychologically informed approach to decision making, which draws on feedback from other titan sites who have advised that psychological input is necessary within the planning phases to support an effective transition when opening.

Responsibilities required of the Principal Psychologist within the build phase include:

  • A full review of the expected population and their needs
  • Planning and liaising with relevant stakeholders and commissioners related to health and justice provisions, and specialist services including OPD provisions
  • Close collaboration with OPD colleagues will be essential
  • Focus will be required around possible further discreet units, regime delivery and cohorting if applicable, in order to drive a rehabilitative environment that is both safe and secure
  • Consideration for mainstream service provisions including programmes, group work facilities, and interview spaces

Staff recruitment, training and retention will also be at the forefront of their decision making, focusing on the development of culture within a new prison, setting the direction and vision for the establishment. This is a huge opportunity to influence the journey of this prison and impart psychological decision making from its infancy. The joint clinical/operational approach taken throughout LTHSE will be core to implementation and successful longevity.

Alongside the pre-opening planning the postholder will support wider psychological services delivery across HMPPS as required.

After the opening of the prison, the Principal Psychologist will resume the roles and responsibilities set out for Heads of Psychology within LTHSE. This will involve leading the Psychology team, being a visible member of the SLT, and providing consultancy to the Governing Governor. They will be expected to work jointly with the Programmes Team and be integrated throughout the prison.

Pending the establishments opening the successful candidate will be based at HMP Gartree.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
