About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Safety Engineer to join Leonardo’s dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in ensuring that our complex systems meet the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance throughout their entire lifecycle. Working within the Company Safety and Environmental Management System, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, partners, and suppliers to analyze risks, influence design decisions, and deliver safe, reliable systems. Your expertise will help shape the safety strategy for innovative projects, contributing to the development of safety cases, performing detailed safety analyses, and supporting incident investigations when necessary. This role offers a unique opportunity to impact the design and deployment of systems operating in some of the most demanding engineering environments, ensuring safety and environmental standards are upheld at every stage.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in safety engineering, with experience analyzing complex systems, preferably within electronics or avionics environments. A degree in engineering, safety, or a related field is essential. Demonstrated expertise in developing Safety Case Reports, conducting hazard analyses, and performing environmental impact assessments is highly desirable. The candidate should have excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams and stakeholder groups. Familiarity with safety analysis tools such as CAMEO Systems Modeller, DOORS, Adelard ASCE, Isograph FaultTree+, and Microsoft Office suite will be advantageous. A self-motivated attitude with a passion for continuous learning and professional development is essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive safety assessments across the full system lifecycle, from initial requirements definition through design, development, manufacturing, integration, testing, delivery, and disposal.
- Perform detailed safety analyses using techniques such as Functional Failure Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and system requirements analysis to identify potential risks and influence system architecture and design decisions.
- Carry out Environmental Impact Assessments to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and environmental standards, supporting sustainable practices.
- Develop and refine safety requirements, establishing appropriate verification and validation strategies to ensure system safety.
- Construct robust safety arguments supported by evidence to demonstrate compliance and substantiate safety claims to stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
- Present safety analysis findings to integrated project teams and clients, facilitating informed decision-making and risk management.
- Support incident investigations and observation analyses, providing expert insights to prevent future occurrences.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to resolve complex technical challenges, ensuring safety considerations are integrated into system solutions.
- Contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the Company Safety Management System, promoting best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
