Principal Software Engineer x 3

6 months
£73.68 per hour (Inside IR35)
Onsite in Cowes - Isle of Wight

The role

Apply experience to design & develop sub-system solutions, resolve engineering issues and problems, and provide guidance to others for a range of software products as part of a 70 strong software team

Provide technical expertise across the software team for the ongoing maintenance of software that is part of the naval radars that are in service with the Royal Navy on multiple platforms

Provide technical expertise across the software team for the requirements, design, implementation, testing, and verification of the software subsystems on Naval radars

Provide technical expertise for the design and development of subsystems including replacement of obsolete hardware and software to maintain and enhance the capability of the radar products for the RN

Typical duties include:

  • Derive and maintain a set of software requirements from a baseline set of systems requirements
  • Produce and maintain a software design to meet a set of software requirements
  • Use a software design to produce a deliverable software solution
  • Test a software solution to prove that it meets its design aims and requirements
  • Undertake peer reviews or checking/verification of peers’ solutions across Maritime Services
  • Undertake technical reviews, verify, and authorise software engineering designs
  • Act as an Engineering technical lead for a software solution at a sub-system level
  • Maintain a software solution to address reported defects and/or add new functionality
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of Maritime Services software related processes
  • Support the development of individuals and teams to enhance skills and competencies
  • Produce or assist in the creation of software estimates for sub-systems

Skills and Experience:

  • Have a BEng/BSc in Computer Science or other relevant Engineering or Numerate subject (technology, engineering, or science related discipline)
  • Have a CEng or equivalent level of capability, or working towards CEng status
  • Have considerable experience of using at least one high-level programming language - C++, C#, Java. Knowledge of Ada95 is desirable, but not essential.
  • Have considerable experience of using a high-level design methodology (e.g., UML) - Knowledge of UML is essential
  • Have experience of all aspects of a software lifecycle and good knowledge of software lifecycle models (e.g., Waterfall, Agile)
  • Have good knowledge of appropriate software standards (e.g., ISO/IEC/IEE 12207)
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of configuration management and experience of a configuration management tool
  • An understanding of model-based techniques is desirable.
  • Requires an understanding of how activities of own teams interrelate and interact with other functional areas aligned to the same discipline and project
  • Understands in detail the technical specification aligned to the functional area of activity. Requires a limited understanding of the external environment.
  • Provides advice and guidance to others within the same team or same discipline area
  • Within the team, project, or discipline, is recognised by others as a source of authoritative knowledge and is sought out for advice & mentoring
